UPS Raises Its Holiday Shipping Prices
Unlike the rest of us, UPS has already started planning ahead for the holiday season. UPS announced Monday that it will increase shipping rates during Black Friday and Christmas.
This is the first time UPS has charged “peak” shipping charges at a specific time. Between November 19 and December 2, you will have to pay $ 0.27 more for each package sent to your home using UPS Ground. From December 17th to December 23rd, you will have to pay an additional 27 cents again for ground shipping. There is also an 81 cents commission for next day delivery and a 97 cents commission for two or three days delivery.
Extra large packages will incur an additional charge from 19 November to 23 December.
FedEx may also raise prices during the holiday season, according to The Wall Street Journal . Retailers, especially those on the Internet like Amazon, may respond to this increase in shipping by increasing shipping costs, increasing the price of their items, or choosing to cover costs in favor of more online businesses.
UPS said the fee was necessary because shipping costs, including seasonal staff and additional freight charges, increase during peak periods. The fees will add $ 50 million to UPS revenue this year, Citi Research estimates.
One way to avoid peak rates is to shop early (before November) for your holiday shopping. You can also send goods to stores for pickup, or of course, do all your purchases in real life.
