Google for Jobs Can Save You Time on Your Next Job Search

Google today launched its new Google for Jobs initiative , which combines job listings from all major job sites in one easy-to-find location.

When you start looking for a new job, this usually involves opening tab by tab of various job listing sites, then entering your search term, then scrolling endlessly until you find something worthwhile. Well, Google thought it was a waste of time. They partnered with job placement services like Monster, LinkedIn, CareerBuilder, Glassdoor, Indeed, WayUp, DirectEmployers, Facebook and others to bring all of these listings together in one place.

Go to the Google search page on your computer or mobile device, enter a search such as “jobs near me” or “IT jobs,” and you’ll be presented with a huge list of all jobs that match your query. You can then tinker with various settings to make your search more specific.

However, you are not actually applying for these jobs through Google. You will be shown a full list of vacancies, job type (full-time, part-time, contract, etc.), publication date, and company ratings from sites like Indeed, Glassdoor, Kununu, and Careerbliss. … Some lists will even show travel times if you’re signed in to your Google account and your home address is listed on your profile. If you see a job that you like, a button will appear that says “Browse on [the original site],” which will direct you to where you can actually apply. Sometimes it is an employment service site like Monster or CareerBuilder, and sometimes it is a company website. If you’ve ever used Google Flights to find bookings, this is something like this.

You can also customize your job search with various filters to further narrow your search. You can filter the job category (and search for multiple categories at once), job title, job date, job type, location, company type, or search within the same employer. So let’s say you want to find a full-time job in computers and information technology with a managerial position at a manufacturing company located in your city that has been published in the last three days. You can do it.

Better yet, you can perform this search and then set up alerts for any newly posted jobs that match those parameters. I tested the alerts feature and an email was sent to me announcing a new job as soon as it appeared.

Google isn’t quite reinventing the wheel with this new feature, but they oil it up by collecting all the listings it can find, removing duplicate posts, and hiding jobs you don’t need. Even so, they are not interested in competing with other employment service sites – this is a strictly new search feature. After all, the Google for Jobs initiative wouldn’t have worked without partnerships with other job sites. The new search feature is young, but as Google for Jobs continues to improve, there won’t be much reason to at least not start your job search with it. You are almost guaranteed to save yourself time.
