You Can Play This HQ Trivia Knockoff on Your Android Phone Right Now
Android: In a few short months, HQ Trivia has gone from being a cool new app to a full-fledged phenomenon, gathering hundreds of thousands of players multiple times a day for a chance to win some money by answering quizzes in real time. Despite all this success, you still can’t play without an iOS device, but luckily for all Android fans, there is already an alternative – and it’s pretty good.
Yesterday I downloaded The Q (short for question), a free Android and iOS app with the same premise as HQ Trivia. The host asks a series of real-time multiple-choice questions and the winners share the prize money. It’s not as polished as the HQ and the owner isn’t as experienced, but in some ways the Q could actually be better.
First, you can play it on Android. This opens up access to HQ to a huge new audience that was previously overlooked, at least until the promised version of Android . Q also has a smaller user base (a few thousand people logged in with me instead of the typical 300,000 HQ games), so it doesn’t seem as competitive. Finally, an inexperienced presenter means that you will spend less time listening to dirty jokes and more time answering trivial questions.
On the other hand, Q had some lag, but no more than a regular HQ Trivia round. It’s also much less polished, with a square gray design, and the prizes are much less (a few hundred dollars instead of thousands).
For now, though, Q is your best bet on Android if you want to try this new trivia app that all your iPhone friends are obsessed with.
