How to Make a Spanner the Size You Want
Ever come across a bolt that doesn’t quite fit your wrench? Of course have. Regardless of how strongly the requirements are required, the equipment lives up to expectations. Here’s what to do if you don’t want to buy another special piece of equipment just to disassemble the bookshelf.
Reddit user u / uglyorgan8038 posted a video of what they call an “instant wrench” in ” Instant Wrench” by r / lifehacks . In the clamp, a bolt that does not quite fit the existing wrench is unscrewed with a manual adjustable wrench. The manufacturer uses two hex nuts on the threaded rod, then moves their position to match the bolt exactly.
There is some debate in the comments about the potential effectiveness of this hack in real-world applications. For example, if you don’t have an adjustable wrench, why would you want to lay a piece of threaded rod? The rod must also be quite long for the user to turn the bolt. The approximate bolt in the video is also fairly loosely screwed into the wood. This makeshift tool may not be possible for anything more durable.
But u / Pyronic_Chaos had a few suggestions on how to improve this hack to make it more applicable:
Assuming you only have one wrench, the ideal size for the nuts, you can place a pair of washers over it to increase the contact area, and tighten the bolts with that one wrench and install a locking pair of nuts on the other end. Then it will probably work. But it won’t rip out the rusty nut, unless that threaded rod is really long and like 3/8 ”, otherwise it will just buckle and swallow.
However, u / ushutuppicard strongly opposes the suggestion that this would help:
adjustable tools are almost unsuitable for anything very heavy, and they are made specifically for that.
3/8 inch !! ?? Bend and swallow? No, dude, I’m sorry. Bolt bending is the least of the problems. The bolts do not hold the “tool” to the mount. No way, no way.
It looks like you might need to buy a dedicated wrench for each bolt in your toolbox, but as a last resort, this trick is worth trying. Sometimes you need to unscrew something before opening a hardware store.
