Be the Hero of the Holiday Party With Dip
Now that Thanksgiving is over and everyone has the must-have turkey cooked up, we can turn our attention to other, more important things like holiday parties and holiday party snacks. To have a good party, you need to give people what they want, and people – in my experience – want to get into life.
During my time at Skillet, I wrote quite a lot about dip because I believe it is an almost perfect meal that delivers a truly delicious culinary experience. Scooping up a creamy sauce with crispy chips or plant nibs will add contrast in flavor and texture, and it’s really fun (and easy) to eat. (Why complicate your meal with fancy cookware?) Instead of making you search all over the site for the best and brightest sauces, I’ve compiled them here for you to cook, serve, and consume this holiday season:
- Cheese Sauce: This is perhaps my favorite category. Here we have several stars of the genre, including three-ingredient blue cheese, allspice cheese, hot honey goat cheese tipping , labneh , three types of Queso , Fromage fort , and although they are not technically dips, they are dipping and adjoining I. their anyway- cheeseballs .
- Onion sauce: I’m no better than canned French onion sauce, but making it yourself is very easy and delicious. I love deeply caramelized onion sauce (to which you can add horseradish, any bagel seasoning, or even ramen powder), and crispy green onion sauce .
- Fruit sauce: not all sauces are spicy, some are sweet, creamy, so beautiful and perfect with fruit .
- Hummus (and other bean sauces): Regular hummus is never a bad choice, but have you heard the good news about fried hummus ? Want guests to wonder? Taste the sweeter side of the sauce with this sautéed butter and maple recipe . If (somehow) you’re tired of chickpeas, you can use this formula to make a sauce with canned legumes that can be stored in your closet.
- Vegan-Friendly Cashew Sauce: This cashew and chili sauce looks odd but delicious and requires only two ingredients.
- Sauces that are mostly flavored sour cream: I know I dip chips in plain sour cream, but this is a private reception, not something I would serve at a party. To season dairy products just enough to be called a sauce, add these flavorful friends (miso is my favorite).
Obviously there are a few more sauces to make and eat – I’m still trying to get my friend Ryan to share his spinach and artichoke recipe – so feel free to share your favorites with the class. Oh, and if you’re looking for new and exciting dipping transport systems, just remember that bacon is a dipping dish and I was told that it is especially good in hummus.
