10 Useful Spotlight Search Tips Every IPhone User Should Know.
Spotlight is the main tool on my iPhone. From searching contacts to enabling little-known features, I use Spotlight every day for a variety of tasks. But while many of us use it, I think most don’t utilize Spotlight to its full potential. Yes, it’s the way you search on your iPhone, but it’s also a launcher for automation, a calculator, a currency converter, and a way to launch tasks within your favorite apps. If you have an iPhone, here are 10 Spotlight search hacks you should know.
To set timers, alarms, or use the stopwatch, bypass the Clock app.
The Clock app lets you set timers, alarms, and a stopwatch. Typically, you need to open the Clock app on your iPhone to access all of these features, but Spotlight makes it easy. Open Spotlight on your iPhone and search for “Clock.” The search results will show the following options: “Clock,” “Set Timer,” “Add Alarm,” and “Stopwatch.” Tap any of the last three buttons to launch these features using Dynamic Island on your iPhone .
Tapping the “Set Timer” button reveals a slider for selecting the timer duration. Similarly, the “Add Alarm” button lets you set an alarm without opening the Clock app, and the “Stopwatch” button immediately starts the countdown and even lets you pause or set a lap time without opening the app.
Find text in photos and screenshots with Spotlight search.
Your iPhone has built-in OCR (optical character recognition), meaning it can recognize, highlight, and copy text in photos and screenshots. Spotlight lets you search for text in images without opening the Photos app. Simply launch Spotlight and search for a word or phrase. All images containing your search term will appear in the Photos section of the search results.
Convert units of measurement and currencies without opening websites or apps.
I grew up in a country that uses the metric system, and I can’t understand the imperial units of measurement used in the US and UK. Whenever I read something that mentions gallons, fluid ounces, miles, stones, or other units that should have been phased out in the 19th century, I use Spotlight for a quick translation. Try searching for “1 inch to centimeters” or similar terms with different units of measurement, and the results will show up at the top.
To convert currency, enter the currency symbol followed by the amount, and Spotlight will convert it to your local currency by default. Try searching for “£120” or “$240,” and the converted currency will appear in the results. You can also try a more specific search, such as “£360 to USD,” to convert to the currency of your choice.
Perform calculations in the Spotlight search box.
I rarely open the calculator on my iPhone. When I need to do simple math, I launch Spotlight and type in a query. It works with addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, and even percentages. Spotlight’s calculation syntax is simple, but to calculate percentages, you’ll need something like “20% x 180.” This is great for calculating tips or splitting bills.
Enter any date to create a calendar entry or find photos.
Spotlight lets you quickly add calendar entries. Activate Spotlight on your iPhone, enter a future date, and tap the “Add” button in the Event widget. This will open the calendar entry page and allow you to add an event without opening the Calendar app. You can also search for specific months in the past, such as “October 2024,” to find photos, messages, and emails from that month. Results appear in neatly organized sections under each app’s name, and tapping a result takes you to specific photos, messages, or emails.
Click the Record button to start recording your voice.
Spotlight also lets you quickly start recording your voice. Type “record” to display results related to the Voice Memos app on your iPhone. Tap the “Record” button to record a voice memo, and a timer and a button to stop recording will appear on your iPhone’s screen.
Download videos from Instagram, Threads, or YouTube directly from Spotlight.
If you use automation on your iPhone to download videos from Instagram, Threads, or YouTube, you can run it directly from Spotlight. Simply search for “Download” in Spotlight, and shortcuts named “Download Instagram,” “Download Threads,” and “Download YouTube” will appear in the results. If you have a video URL from one of these sites copied to your clipboard, tapping the corresponding shortcut will instantly start downloading the video. This is perfect for when you receive a social media link in Messenger. You can copy it and then run the automation from Spotlight.
Use Spotlight to turn on grayscale mode when you want to eliminate distractions.
I use this automation every day to reduce my smartphone time . Searching for “Color Filters” allows me to toggle this setting directly from Spotlight and turn on grayscale mode when I need to focus on work. Disabling this feature is just as easy. If you use another feature buried deep in iOS settings, you can find it using Spotlight and toggle it as needed.
Press the Focus key to cycle through the different Do Not Disturb modes on your iPhone.
The search bar isn’t the most obvious place to switch between different focus modes on your iPhone, but it works quite well. Simply type “Focus” into Spotlight, and it will display several Do Not Disturb modes, allowing you to choose the one you want. These results appear under “Settings” in Spotlight search results.
You can hide apps and content from Spotlight in iOS settings.
You can also hide apps and search results from Spotlight. This is a good way to prevent dating apps or sensitive data from appearing in search results. To set this up, go to Settings > Search on your iPhone. Under “Before Searching,” tap the drop-down menu next to “Suggest Apps.” Select “Don’t Suggest” if you want to hide all suggested apps from Spotlight. Instead, you can use your iPhone’s App Library to search and launch apps more quickly .
If this seems too drastic, scroll down to find the individual apps you want to hide from Spotlight. Tap the app name and toggle off “Show this app in search.” To hide search results for this app in Spotlight, toggle off “Show content in search” on the same page. You’ll only need to do this once for each app.
