Using This Built-in Pillow Speaker Is Much More Comfortable Than Sleeping With Headphones.

If you’re one of those people who can’t fall asleep without the monotonous ” Sleep With Me ” podcast or one of Spotify’s “Sleep Music 528 Hz” playlists, then this week’s update is for you. I need sound to fall asleep, and I usually sleep with headphones, but if you’re a side sleeper, they can dig into your skull the moment you roll over. And simply playing audio through your phone’s speaker isn’t an option at all if you’re sharing a bed with a partner.

The Jabees Peace Duo sleep speaker system is one of my favorite solutions to one of the most difficult problems: how to listen to music all night, comfortably and privately, without any accessories on or in the ears?

How does this under-pillow speaker work?

The Peace Duo headphones use my favorite audio technology —bone conduction (or pillow conduction?). Bone conduction devices typically transmit sound vibrations directly to the inner ear, through the bones of the skull, rather than through open air or directly into the ear canals.

This speaker sits under your pillow, not in or on your body, which is precisely the purpose of the “private under-the-pillow listening” claim. The sound stays close to your head and doesn’t spread throughout the room like with a phone or bedside speaker. Its dual-driver design provides separate left and right channels, creating a stereo image based on your body position. Plus, it boasts a reliable 10-hour battery life, so you can listen to sleep music all night without worry.

However, before I give my full recommendation, it’s worth noting a few caveats. Here’s what to expect:

What do you think at the moment?

  • There’s some sound leakage. If someone is sleeping next to you, they might hear a little of the sound, but it will be significantly quieter than if you simply played the same audio through your phone’s speaker.

  • Sound coming through the pillow is muffled. When used for audio content, such as sleep podcasts, dialogue loses some clarity—if you want clear, intelligible speech, it won’t sound like a podcast studio recording. And, of course, your music won’t sound as clear as it would through headphones.

The main reason for this upgrade is the desire to have a reliable device that I can sleep with without worrying about rolling over, dropping my headphones in my sheets, or otherwise risking my expensive electronics. This is another thing I don’t have to worry about breaking or losing overnight, and for me, it’s the most convenient solution for this particular situation.

And frankly, this slightly muted soundscape isn’t always a downside! There’s something about this soft, pillow-filtered sound that reinforces the very idea of falling asleep. I feel like I’m truly immersed in these sounds, transforming my meditations into a pleasant, immersive dream world.

If you fall asleep to audio every night and are tired of headphones falling out or rubbing your ears, the Jabees Peace Duo sleep speaker is a convenient and private way to listen to music—as long as you’re willing to sacrifice a little sound quality for greater comfort.
