To get started, set up your Garmin watch to focus on sleep analytics. On your watch, press and hold the menu button, go to “Settings,” then “Glimpses,” and drag ” Sleep Glimpse” to the top of the list so it’s one of the first things you see when you wake up and check your wrist.

While you’re at it, turn on the Sleep Coach feature if it’s not already enabled. It’s located in Settings > Sleep , and once enabled, it compares your recent sleep history with your training load and roughly estimates how much sleep you need on a given night, rather than simply setting a target of eight hours.

It’s also worth understanding what’s actually going on behind your nighttime sleep score, as this will explain why this number sometimes seems disconnected from your actual well-being. Garmin calculates its score based on a combination of data: how long you slept, how well you slept, and what they describe as signs of restorative activity in your autonomic nervous system, derived from heart rate variability data. Simply put, the watch theoretically tracks tiny changes in the time between each heartbeat during sleep and takes this into account when calculating its score. The idea is that this can reveal difficult nights when your body never fully shuts down, even though you technically lay still the entire time.

Ignore Garmin’s Body Battery score and focus on the following metrics instead.

The Body Battery metric gets a lot of attention because it’s a visually appealing, supposedly straightforward indicator of recovery. However, it’s an ambiguous, somewhat opaque metric, and relying too heavily on it for sleep analysis can be misleading. A few numbers below it will tell you more. When creating the sleep dashboard I mentioned above, consider prioritizing these metrics.

Heart rate variability (HRV) is the most useful indicator to consider. A lower-than-normal overnight HRV is one of the most reliable early indicators that you’re either not fully recovered, are becoming ill, or are experiencing increased stress that your body hasn’t yet fully recovered from, even if you’ve technically gotten enough sleep.

It’s also worth monitoring your pulse oximetry and respiratory rate , especially when combined. An increased respiratory rate at rest or a drop in blood oxygen levels overnight may indicate respiratory distress, poor indoor air quality, or sleeping at a high altitude. None of these factors will necessarily dramatically lower your “sleep quality score,” but they all affect how rested you feel.

Regarding sleep structure , more attention should be paid to the total time spent in bed and its fragmentation, rather than the so-called division into sleep stages. Sleep stage measurements using wrist-based devices, whether Garmin or any other wearable, are rough estimates based on movement and heart rate, not clinical-grade brainwave data. No wearable device will be completely accurate in determining sleep stages, so such estimates should not be relied upon too much. Total sleep duration (and its fragmentation) is a more reliable indicator that can be trusted.

Turn on nap tracking on your Garmin watch to get better sleep guidance.

In my opinion, the nap feature in Garmin Connect is one of the least used. If you sleep for 20 minutes or longer, the watch can register it as a nap rather than just inactivity, which is important because it subsequently recalculates your daily sleep goal. On most watches, you can initiate this manually from the activity menu or quick view by selecting “Nap” or “Rest,” or the watch will automatically detect longer periods of stationary rest, depending on your model.

The main reason this is important is that if you don’t log your naps, Garmin still assumes you need a full night’s restorative sleep, even though you may have already gotten some of it. Logging your naps helps you maintain the highest possible Sleep Coach recommendations and may help explain why your nighttime metrics may seem inaccurate.

Change the brightness and notification settings on your Garmin watch at night.

Vibrating or lighting up your watch on your wrist at 2 a.m. won’t improve your heart rate variability (HRV). Go to Settings > Display and enable Sleep Mode (sometimes called Do Not Disturb ) to dim your screen or keep it off overnight. Set up scheduled Do Not Disturb hours in Settings > Notifications to prevent calls, messages, and app alerts from reaching your wrist while you sleep.

Some Garmin models also allow you to set an automatic “Do Not Disturb” mode based on your sleep patterns, which is worth turning on to avoid reminding yourself about it every night. Besides being annoying, a bright screen or vibration on your skin can cause brief awakenings that will show up in your data as fragmented sleep, even if you don’t consciously remember waking up.

Use Garmin’s lifestyle tracking feature to learn what affects your sleep.

In the Sleep section of Garmin Connect, you can log lifestyle factors like alcohol and caffeine consumption, and other habits, along with your nightly sleep data. The value here lies not in tracking daily fluctuations, but in identifying patterns. If you notice that deep sleep consistently decreases on nights when you drink alcohol, this is valuable information for improving your sleep hygiene. Compare this to someone who checks their heart rate variability (HRV) trends every morning without a real reference point for determining the causes of these fluctuations, and you’ll realize that the Lifestyle Logging section is where your true insights lie.

For most people, the simplest version of this process is sufficient: simply track your total sleep time, your overall sleep quality score, and the amount of beverages or caffeine you consumed throughout the day. I also recommend keeping notes on whether you felt sluggish during the day, as this data can be useful for identifying patterns.

The five tricks described above only work if you wear your watch correctly. If it’s too loose, it won’t give accurate readings; if it’s too tight, it may become so uncomfortable that you’ll either take it off in your sleep or toss and turn more than usual.

The general rule is to wear your watch tight enough to prevent it from shifting, but not so tight that it leaves marks. Optical heart rate sensors perform best when in constant contact with your skin, so a slightly tighter fit at night than during daytime exercise is usually optimal.
