10 Life Hacks Every Intel-Based Mac User Should Know

With the release of macOS 27 next month, Apple will officially bid farewell to its Intel-based Macs . Only computers with Apple’s own processors ( including the A18 Pro in the MacBook Neo ) will be able to upgrade to macOS Golden Gate next month. Although Apple hasn’t sold Intel-based Macs for quite some time, there are still plenty of them available. You might even still use an Intel-based Mac as your primary computer.

While I can’t say enough good things about Apple Silicon, I’m also a firm believer in using technology as long as it works. So if you’re using one of Apple’s older Macs, whether it’s a MacBook, Mac mini, or iMac, you should check out these tips and tricks to get the most out of your machine—and hopefully, put off upgrading for quite some time.

Use OpenCore Legacy Patcher to update to the latest available OS version.

Your Intel-based Macmay support the latest version of Apple software at the time of writing—macOS 26. But if you’ve had your computer for a while, that’s likely not the case—in fact, it may not even support two or three previous versions of macOS. That’s where OpenCore Legacy Patcher comes in . This project bypasses Apple’s restrictions and allows you to install macOS versions on devices that the company no longer officially supports. The idea isn’t to make an older Mac struggle to run a newer version of macOS: many computers are perfectly capable of running macOS versions that Apple doesn’t officially support, so users may be pleasantly surprised by their performance.

Unfortunately, OpenCore Legacy Patcher itself is becoming a deprecated product. Now that Apple has abandoned Intel, a system like OpenCore may be unable to install macOS 27 on your Mac. OpenCore currently supports the latest version of macOS Sequoia, so you won’t be able to upgrade to macOS 26 Tahoe or macOS 27 Golden Gate. However, you can use this platform to run a newer version on your Mac, which can improve both third-party software support and your security. The good news is that even if you can’t run the latest version of macOS on your computer, you can still run the latest versions of essential apps: Apple continues to update the Safari app for older versions of macOS, as do many third-party app developers. If your Intel-based Mac has fans and you’ve never cleaned them, take care of them. Your Mac’s fans are designed to cool internal components by diverting hot air away from the computer. The longer they can prevent components from overheating, the longer you can use your Mac without experiencing performance degradation—or, in other words, the longer your Mac can operate at peak performance. Over time, dust accumulates inside the fans, reducing their ability to move air effectively. After a few years, your fans may stop moving hot air effectively. Fortunately, this is an easy fix.

To clean your Mac’s fans, you’ll need to open the case. The cleaning method depends on your specific Mac model. (An iMac can be especially challenging to open, as it requires removing the entire display.) To find instructions for your model, search for your device on iFixit, as they’ll likely have both step-by-step instructions and the necessary tools to complete the job.

Use Mac Fan Control to push your fans to their limits.

After cleaning, make sure your Mac’s fans are cooling at full speed. While macOS automatically adjusts fan speed based on how you use your Mac, you can install a program like Macs Fan Control to gain direct control over your Mac’s fans. You can run them at full speed if you want maximum cooling, or simply monitor your Mac’s overall temperature. I used this program regularly to maintain high performance on my Intel-based MacBook; without it, I noticed my Mac slowing down during intensive sessions. With it, I was able to use it much more intensively.

Upgrade your RAM and SSD to breathe new life into your Mac.

If your Mac is very old, you might be able to “hack” it to improve its performance. For the past 14 years, Apple has been obsessed with gluing and soldering all its components, making individual upgrades impossible. But older machines used to be equipped with modular components that users could upgrade themselves. This was particularly true for RAM and hard drives. Installing additional memory allows your Mac to run more programs and processes simultaneously without slowing down; if your Mac has a physical hard drive, adding an SSD will significantly speed up startup and boot times. Of course, the prices of these components may have risen to unsustainable levels due to the global memory crisis .

However, if your MacBook or iMac falls into this category, you should definitely consider upgrading it.The latest MacBook that supports RAM upgrades was released in 2012 , whilethe latest iMac wasn’t released until 2020. Replace your battery to extend the life of your MacBook.

If you have an Intel-based MacBook and you’ve never replaced the battery, it’s probably time to upgrade. Lithium-ion batteries don’t last forever, and as they wear out, their overall capacity decreases. Let’s say your battery currently has a maximum capacity of 75%. This means that after charging to 100%, it will perform as if it were only charged to 75% of its original capacity. By replacing the battery, you restore the life of your MacBook—or at least its battery life.

The ease of battery replacement will depend on your MacBook model. Again, very old MacBooks are much easier to repair, so your main concern may be simply finding a new battery. If your older MacBook is a newer model, you may find the battery easier to replace, but replacing it may be more difficult. In this case, it might make sense to take it to a repair shop—assuming the cost of the repair isn’t comparable to the cost of a new MacBook. To do this, search online for information about your specific MacBook model and battery replacement—sites like iFixit will almost certainly have a guide, including a list of the necessary parts.

Use TurboBoostSwitcher to save battery life.

Replacing your battery isn’t the only way to extend the life of your older Mac. Even if your Mac doesn’t support an official power-saving mode, you can download TurboBoostSwitcher to conserve energy. Here’s how it works: Intel processors have something called “Turbo Boost,” which kicks in when the system detects that you need more power than usual. This is great for performance, but bad for battery life—especially if you prioritize battery over power. Furthermore, overly active Turbo Boost can cause your Mac to overheat, which can cause the system to slow down to keep cool—defeating the purpose of Turbo Boost entirely.

TurboBoostSwitcher allows you to manually disable Turbo Boost mode when you want to save power. This prevents the processor from working at its maximum capacity under heavy load—so while you may notice some performance slowdown, your battery life will also improve. This was my go-to solution when my main computer was a MacBook with an Intel processor, and I’m glad it’s still available.

Install Windows via Boot Camp to access two operating systems.

If you need access to Windows for work or personal use, but only have a Mac with an Intel processor, you don’t need to buy a new PC. Since your Mac has an Intel processor, you can install and run Windows directly on your computer using the official Mac process called Boot Camp. With Boot Camp, you “partition” a portion of your Mac’s hard drive for Windows—for example, allocate 100 GB, which is enough to install the OS and store system files. Whichever you choose, when you boot your Mac, you’ll be able to choose macOS or Windows and boot into either. Although Apple hasn’t sold Macs with Intel processors for many years, the company still has an official Boot Camp guide you can follow to get started.

Use BetterTouchTool to customize your Touch Bar.

I’ll always have a special relationship with the Touch Bar. While I admit the company could have made some better decisions—like adding a row of physical function keys below it—I always liked the Touch Bar and enjoyed using it to customize controls. The few apps that actually utilized the Touch Bar’s functionality were also useful, but for the most part, the feature felt underdeveloped or even counterintuitive.

However, if your MacBook has a Touch Bar, there are ways to “hack” it to your advantage. You can tweak system settings , but you can go further than Apple’s own settings (which the company has long since abandoned). BetterTouchTool lets you customize the appearance and behavior of the Touch Bar, as well as add features like widgets and gestures. The app allows you to customize many aspects of your Mac beyond the Touch Bar, but I originally discovered it specifically for hacking the Touch Bar. If your Mac has a Touch Bar, give it a try.

Use your Mac as an external drive.

Data storage is a precious resource. Hard drives are more expensive than ever, so using any available storage should be a priority. So, if you don’t use your old Mac very often, think of it as an external drive. Depending on your Mac model, you may have as much storage space as if you were to purchase a separate hard drive. For example, my old MacBook with Touch Bar has a 512GB hard drive, so I use it to back up some important files, especially videos. Of course, you can recycle your old Mac to avoid unnecessary clutter, but if you still need an external drive, your computer probably already has one.

Use Plex to turn your old Mac into a media server.

If you’re no longer going to use your Mac for its intended purpose, don’t give it away. Instead, use it as a home media server. These servers allow you to set up your own Netflix: you add your digital media files (movies, TV shows, music, photos, etc.) and then set up the server on your Mac. When properly configured, you can access your content from any device, anywhere with an internet connection. You can watch TV shows on your TV streamed from your Mac, or listen to music on the go by remotely connecting to your home computer. A service like Plex is a good place to start. However, Plex is just one of many similar platforms; others include Emby , Jellyfin , and Kodi .
