Why Regular Athletes Test Their Endurance (and Why It’s Mostly Pointless)

The TrainingPeaks app—a training log tool used by many serious runners, cyclists, and triathletes—recently introduced direct integration with hDrop , a reusable wearable sweat sensor. The idea is that athletes wear it on their arm, and sweat and sodium loss data is recorded alongside training notes, alongside heart rate and power. The integration allows hDrop users to sync hydration metrics such as sweat loss, sodium loss, and hydration behavior directly to TrainingPeaks, making them part of the same metrics as heart rate or pace.
hDrop, which sells its wearable hydration monitor for $249.99, isn’t alone. Two other major manufacturers of wearable sweat monitors are Nix (around $189) and FlowBio (around $340). On the budget side, Gatorade sells disposable sweat tests for around $25. The goal of all these wearable sweat-measuring devices is to accurately determine how much fluid and sodium you lose while running or cycling.
As a marathon runner, I can easily understand the appeal of these products. After all, in a real-world lab setting, sweat analysis can be used to provide personalized fluid and electrolyte recommendations for serious athletes. These consumer sweat sensors achieve the same goal, just without the lab setting. Unfortunately, as numerous studies have shown, achieving lab-level accuracy in the field is difficult. Let’s look at why you probably should n’t waste your time and money on yet another wearable device just for sweat measurement.
How accurate are wearable sweat measurement devices?
Researchers note that most sweat-measuring devices have not undergone rigorous testing in the high-temperature and humid conditions experienced by athletes, and that only a few devices have accuracy data obtained from large field studies rather than controlled laboratory conditions. A 2026 study examining the sodium composition of sweat and assessing sweat loss using wearable sensors concluded that measurements obtained with these consumer devices “should currently be interpreted with caution and should not be considered equivalent to laboratory analysis.”
In this case, for us, as inquisitive runners and cyclists, the main difficulty with consumer sweat tests is that sweat is a constantly changing quantity. Sodium concentration in sweat varies from day to day depending on heat acclimation, physical activity, and diet. It’s also important to consider the small area of skin from which the sample is collected. A sample taken on the forearm or shoulder doesn’t account for sweat draining from the back, head, or torso, which behave differently. Trying to extrapolate readings from one area to the total amount of sweat produced or sodium lost from the body introduces significant error.
Even hDrop, Nix, and FlowBio—which claim to have the highest accuracy of sweat sensors on the market—are forced to point out in their troubleshooting tips that poor skin contact will lead to inaccurate readings, as will interference from water or any liquid other than sweat. Ultimately, these devices are sensitive to humidity, temperature, and position—in other words, to all the obstacles that are sure to arise during the intense workout you’re trying to measure.
What does this mean for you?
Don’t get me wrong—I’m all for full-fledged sweat testing if I have access to a lab. For now, I’d prefer free, off-the-shelf hydration tracking apps over a new wearable. Even if they’re not as perfect as a lab, tracking your hydration can still reveal useful patterns. Perhaps you sweat noticeably more in humid weather, or you consistently have salty sweat, or your sweat loss spikes at the end of long workouts. Recording all this information in an app like TrainingPeaks will help you identify patterns and adjust your hydration and nutrition strategy.
But the leap people make—from “my sweat patch shows I’ve lost 900 mg of sodium” to perceiving it as an accurate metric suitable for decision-making, like heart rate or pace—isn’t supported by the current accuracy of consumer sweat measurement devices. These devices are not yet a substitute for a proper lab sweat test. If you want to find out for yourself, go ahead. Personally, I’d rather save the money on hydration testing and spend it on the actual process of hydration and nutrition .
