After years of post-COVID uncertainty, are movies finally back? Judging by the July box office, it certainly is: released within weeks of each other , “Odyssey” and “Spider-Man: New Day” posted record results (the latter even set the all-time opening weekend record , earning $360 million in the US alone).
But if you ask me, the biggest box office success of the year was far more unpredictable than a film from the world’s most beloved director (or starring the most popular superhero): Obsession, a gritty R-rated horror film made on a budget of under $1 million, ended up grossing over $262 million—a true word-of-mouth phenomenon. On the other hand, with numbers like those, it’s no surprise that Obsession is topping streaming charts now that it’s available to watch at home. Here are other films that caught the eye last month, according to JustWatch .
Obsession (2026)
A surprise hit from first-time director Curry Barker, who got his start with sketch comedy on YouTube, “Obsession” debuted to surprisingly high box office receipts during its opening weekend and has continued to generate revenue ever since. Horror fans apparently couldn’t get enough of the story of a hapless teenager (Michael Johnston) who gets more than he bargained for when he picks up a “Wish Willow” toy and expresses his heart’s desire: for his girlfriend Nikki (Indi Navarrette) to fall in love with him. Project “Ave Maria” (2026)
In this gripping sci-fi film, Ryan Gosling plays Ryland Grace, a high school science teacher who, in a desperate attempt to save the world, finds himself thrown into the heavens. Grace is the only person on Earth who might know how to protect the sun from a cosmic contagion that threatens all life, but he’s definitely no astronaut and doesn’t consider himself a hero. Will he prove himself and learn something about his inner strength and resilience while saving us all from death? My guess is yes, probably. Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die (2026)
Legendary director Gore Verbinski ( The Ring, Pirates of the Caribbean ) returns with a satirical, joyfully maximalist sci-fi comedy that explores artificial intelligence, social media addiction, virtual reality, and the modern world itself. Sam Rockwell plays a man from the future who shows up at a Los Angeles diner, demanding patrons help him save the future from an artificial intelligence about to be born. As a time traveler, Rockwell has tried and failed numerous times, but this time things will be different — or everyone will die again. Part Terminator , part Black Mirror , Not Die is a film that throws everything at the wall, pushing it so far that you’ll be forced to come to terms with its bizarre logic and style out of sheer exhaustion. Sheep Detectives (2026)
A family film with just enough dark moments to balance out all the cute sheep, “The Sheep Detectives” tells the story of an English farmer, played by Hugh Jackman, who reads detective stories to his flock of sheep every night. When he’s found dead, authorities chalk it up to natural causes, but his sheep know the truth and set out to find the culprit using the knowledge they’ve gained from all those detective stories. If you like the Babe movies, you’ll love “The Sheep Detectives,” and if you think you’re too cynical to appreciate such a film, you’re probably wrong: it’s charming and funny. “The Sheep Detectives” is available to stream on Prime Video .
Ready or Not 2: Here I Come (2026)
Ready or Not 2 , a surprise hit in 2019, tells the story of a woman (Samara Weaving) who goes to meet her fiancé’s parents and ends up their victim—the next target in a game of demonic ritual sacrifices dating back centuries. The unexpected sequel picks up just minutes after the first film, as other super-rich and super-powerful families, under the grip of the same evil, show up for round two. With a terrific cast (including Sarah Michelle-Gellar, Elijah Wood, and director David Cronenberg) and a darkly humorous tone that pokes fun at the rich, it’s a hell of a lot of fun. Troy (2004)
Why is a 22-year-old, vaguely remembered historical action film starring Brad Pitt suddenly popping up on streaming service charts? It’s understandable, considering Troy is essentially a prequel to the 2026 Odyssey . In this vibrant but superficial epic from director Wolfgang Petersen, Pitt plays the legendary warrior Achilles, who sets sail in the service of his king, Agamemnon (Brian Cox), to lay siege to the city of the film’s title and free Helen (Diane Kruger), wife of the Spartan king Menaeus (Agamemnon’s brother), from her “captors”—Hector and Paris, the young princes of Troy. If you’ve studied mythology (or if you’ve seen the new Christopher Nolan film), you know how it all ends (it’s all about a horse). “Troy” can be streamed on Peacock.
Masters of the Universe (2026)
As a kid, I was obsessed with He-Man—me and every other boy born between 1975 and 1982. I dreamed of seeing the muscular hero on the big screen, but the 1987 film adaptation starring Dolph Lundgren left me completely unimpressed; it didn’t resemble the toys or cartoons at all. It turns out I just had to wait 40 years, because the 2026 version, from Kubo and the Two Strings and Bumblebee director Travis Knight, if anything, adheres too closely to the more kitschy aspects of the franchise, teetering on the line between a serious action movie and a Barbie parody. As a result (or perhaps simply because 40 years is too long to expect people to be interested in a Hercules knockoff), the film flopped at the box office, but perhaps it will find an audience among middle-aged men on streaming platforms. The Long Way (2025)
This chilling adaptation of one of Stephen King’s early novels is ripped straight from the capitalist hellscape of 2026: in an alternate version of the 1970s United States, a fascist government has seized power and, as a means of control, annually hosts a “competition” called “The Walk,” in which a group of 50 boys are forced to compete in a nonstop cross-country walking race. The winner receives one wish, while the losers receive a bullet to the head. Two contestants (played by Cooper Hoffman and David Jonsson) fight for their lives under the watchful eye of the ruthless Major (played by Mark Hamill as the true villain). Pressure (2026)
If you haven’t heard of Pressure , ask your dad: this World War II film, starring Oscar-winning Brendan Fraser as General Dwight D. Eisenhower, is a great choice for a “dad” movie. It chronicles the events leading up to the Normandy landings and how Eisenhower works closely with meteorologist (yes, really) James Stagg (Andrew Scott) to determine whether conditions are right for the planned invasion. While the film received positive reviews from critics, it underperformed in theaters, but its understated charm translates beautifully to streaming platforms. You can watch Pressure on Peacock.
Independence Day (1996)
It’s no wonder this massive alien invasion blockbuster hit the streaming charts in July. Even after 30 years, everyone still enjoys spending the Fourth of July watching Will Smith crack wise while everything explodes around him (all culminating in a rousing speech from President Bill Pullman).
