This Quick Solution Will Fix Your IPhone Screen Brightness Issue.

I’ve been plagued by a strange iOS bug for a while now. I can’t pinpoint exactly when it started, but sometime around iOS 26, I noticed that adjusting the brightness on my iPhone 17 Pro Max was slower than usual. This struck me as odd: as far as I knew, iPhones have always had a consistent brightness adjustment rate. You open Control Center, move the brightness slider up or down, and the brightness levels adjust accordingly, almost instantly. But with this bug, things are different.

Since the bug appeared, I’ve periodically noticed that the brightness decreases oddly slowly. Moving the slider still works, but I see each brightness level adjusting incrementally rather than smoothly. Furthermore, even when the brightness reaches its minimum, it doesn’t seem as dark as it should be. I understand this, especially when using the iPhone in a dark room, that the brightness shouldn’t be so high at the minimum level.

I wasn’t sure if it was a hardware or software issue. I’d definitely prefer the latter. If Apple could fix it with a software update, it would be fairly simple. But if the problem were with the 17-series displays, that would be a completely different story. I didn’t think it was a hardware issue, as it was intermittent, but I still had no idea what was happening or how to fix it when it did appear.

The good news is, I found a solution—albeit one I never expected. I finally Googled the problem and stumbled upon this Reddit thread where an iPhone 17 Pro user encountered the same issue as me. The top-ranked comment suggested a solution: tap the “Dictation” button on your iPhone’s keyboard.

What do you think at the moment?

This didn’t make sense to me at all. What does dictation have to do with screen brightness? But I tried it anyway: I opened something like Spotlight on my iPhone, which activated the keyboard, and then tapped the “Dictation” button. And voila: the screen brightness instantly decreased, even though I had already set it to the “lowest” level. When I tried adjusting the brightness, everything worked as expected: the decrease occurred instantly. Why does this solve the problem? I have no idea, but it does. Whatever is reducing screen brightness, it is solved by the dictation feature in iOS, or at least by activating the microphone.

That Reddit post was published in January, meaning Apple still hasn’t fixed the issue. I’m currently running the latest version of iOS at the time of writing (26.5.2), though I haven’t yet tried the iOS 27 beta. Apple may release a fix in the next major iPhone update, but I can’t say for sure until I test it. If your iPhone is also experiencing this strange brightness issue, at least there’s a solution—however unconventional it may be.
