New to Prime Day? We’ve prepared a detailed guide for you covering everything you need to know . Discount information is current at the time of publication, but prices and availability are subject to change.
Considering that in 2026 you can buy practically anything on Amazon, even an entire car , it’s hard to remember that this megacorporation began as a modest online bookstore. Today, that legacy is largely preserved in the form of the Kindle, Amazon’s line of e-readers and e-laptops.
Naturally, the company has given its own e-readers the biggest discounts during Prime Day: almost all models are at least 30% off. But if you prefer reading in other ways, you can also save big on several worthy Kindle alternatives. Here are your best options.
The Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition e-reader is on sale for $55.
It probably goes without saying that the Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition is the best e-reader for most people. It’s an upgraded version of the base Kindle model, featuring a larger screen, adjustable color temperature backlighting, water resistance, and longer battery life—and if you choose the Signature Edition, you won’t see ads on your lock screen. The Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition currently costs $145 , almost 30% off the regular price, and is available in three colors.
The basic version of the Kindle costs only $85.
If you don’t need all the Paperwhite’s features, you can also get a standard Kindle. It’s still a very functional device with a good backlight, 16GB of internal storage, and the ability to connect to Bluetooth speakers for listening to Audible audiobooks. The standard Kindle is on sale for 23% off, priced at just under $85 , making it the cheapest Kindle option.
The Kindle Colorsoft e-book is on sale with a 36% discount.
If you love reading comics or simply appreciate the ability to admire book covers in full color, the Kindle Colorsoft is also on sale for a significant 36% off during Prime Day , dropping the price to $160. For an extra $15 off the Paperwhite Signature Edition, you get all the same benefits (including no ads) and a color e-ink screen, perfect for reading magazines, graphic novels, and manga. Color e-ink isn’t for everyone , but if it’s for you, the Colorsoft has the best color screen on the market. For an extra $20 , the Colorsoft Kids Edition includes a carrying case, a one-year Kindle Kids+ subscription, and a two-year warranty.
Take notes on your books with Kindle Scribe, now 24% off.
If you’re looking for a device that combines the features of an e-reader and a digital notepad, the Kindle Scribe is a great option. With a larger screen than other Amazon e-readers, it offers all the benefits of the Paperwhite but also supports the excellent Premium Pen stylus, allowing you to take notes on Amazon e-books or create handwritten documents that can later be converted to text using built-in AI tools. The 32GB black and white version of the Kindle Scribe currently costs $380 , while the Colorsoft version costs $480 .
The Viwoods AiPaper Reader, a phone-shaped device, is a great open-source alternative to the Kindle for Android.
If you don’t want to be tied to the Amazon ecosystem and/or are looking for a more portable device, consider the Viwoods AiPaper Reader , which is currently on sale for 20% off for $224. It features a 6.13-inch screen, making it similar in size and shape to your phone, and boasts a crisp e-ink display with a bright (though not adjustable color temperature) backlight and 128GB of internal storage. Best of all, it runs on the open Android operating system, so you can install multiple reading apps, including Kindle, Nook, Kobo, and Libby, and keep all your books in one place. ( For more on the Viwoods AiPaper Reader, check out my review —it’s a great little device.)
These Xteink e-books are incredibly popular for good reason, and they’re currently 20% off.
If you don’t have a large Kindle library, are moderately tech-savvy, and value portability above all else, I highly recommend the Xteink line of e-readers. Both the 4.3-inch Xteink X4 and the more compact 3.7-inch Xteink X3 are on sale for 20% off, priced at $55 and $63, respectively, and both models are great for carrying around (they attach magnetically to the back of your phone, which gives an idea of their small size, though I confess I never use this feature). If you’re unsure about trusting a seemingly unknown Chinese tech brand, read more about them in my X4 and X3 reviews or listen to the collective opinion of the 44,000 people in the vibrant r/xteinkereader subreddit .
