Five Life Hacks Every Meta Smartglasses User Should Know.

I’ve been wearing Ray-Ban Meta glasses almost every day for over a year now. They’re great for taking hands-free photos, checking notifications, and listening to podcasts while cycling, but they’re not the most customizable tech product on the market. They’re also not completely hack-proof. Below are five ways to modify your Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta smartglasses, use them in ways that aren’t “officially approved,” and generally make your smartglasses a little smarter than everyone else’s.

Turn your Meta glasses into a scanner and receipt sorter.

I’m a good citizen, so I conscientiously sort my receipts for tax reporting. But I really don’t like it, so I figured out how to use my Meta glasses as a nearly fully automated receipt scanner and organizer. This process saves photos of your receipts in a folder, uses artificial intelligence to scan and sort them, and then stores the information in a searchable spreadsheet. And all this happens without ever touching your phone or keyboard.

What you’ll need to set up Meta Glasses as a receipt scanner

• About 15 minutes of free time, depending on how tech-savvy you are.

• Meta glasses, either Oakley or Ray-Ban.

• A dedicated Gmail account for receiving tax information.

• Google Drive, Google Sheets, Google Photos and Google Apps Script (all free)

• Claude AI API Key (a few cents per check)

How does receipt scanning work with Meta Glasses?

Once set up, you’ll be able to look at a receipt and say, “Hey Meta, take a photo.” Then say, “Hey Siri, email this photo to (insert your Gmail address) with the subject line ‘receipt.'” Every night, the script will automatically scan the receipt, extract the vendor, date, and amount information, write it all to a spreadsheet, and save a photo of the receipt to an album. You won’t even have to open this email inbox until April (but I’d recommend checking it periodically to make sure everything is working).

Setting up Meta points for receipt scanning

• Step 1: Create a separate Gmail account for tax reporting. This will help you stay organized and separate all your emails from your regular inbox.

• Step 2: In the Gmail account designated for tax inquiries, create a label called “Receipts” and set up a filter so that any email with the subject “receipt” is automatically assigned this label. Go to “Settings” > “Filters and Blocked Addresses” > “Create New Filter.”

• Step 3: Create a “Taxes” folder in Google Drive. This is where your receipt spreadsheet will be stored.

• Step 4: Create a Google Sheets spreadsheet called “Receipt Journal” with the following column headings: Date, Vendor, Amount, Tax Category, Notes, Google Drive Link.

• Step 5: Open the receipt journal, then click Extensions > Apps Script . For this part, I wrote a script using Claude’s AI, which you can find in a Google doc here . This script instructs the AI ​​to review the receipt and determine how to place it into the appropriate categories; copy and paste it into Apps Script.

• Step 6 : Get Claude’s API key at console.anthropic.com . It’s possible that another AI besides Claude could be used for this project, but I’m not sure as I haven’t tested others. The cost is a few cents per check, so $5 should last you a year.

• Step 7 : In Google Sheets, go to Project Settings > Script Properties > Add . Add a property named CLAUDE_API_KEY and paste your key as the value. (Never paste it directly into the code.)

• Step 8: Set up a daily trigger to run the script automatically. In Apps Script, click the clock icon, select “Add Trigger ,” and then configure it to run the “processReceipts” function on a daily timer.

What to Consider When Using Meta Glasses for Receipt Scanning

• Keep paper receipts: If there is a problem reading a particular receipt, you will get an error message, but since these are tax documents, keep copies of all receipts just in case.

• Take photos as clear as possible : AI can only read what your glasses see, so hold the receipt level, make sure the lighting is good, and get close enough so the text fills the frame. The Meta camera is on one shoulder, but it’s aimed at the middle, so try to keep the receipt centered. Wrinkled or backlit receipts will produce less accurate results and may require a quick manual correction.

• You can also use your phone to photograph receipts. It’s not as elegant, and you’ll have to use your hands, but it’s easier to ensure the photo is clear.

Change Meta lenses for different activities (no tools required).

Since the Meta glasses’ camera, speakers, and processor are completely integrated into the frame, you can easily change lenses without worrying about damaging your spy glasses. Ray-Ban and Oakley Meta glasses’ lenses easily snap back on and off without tools, so you can swap between clear, tinted, polarized, sports, or reading lenses in seconds, depending on your activity.

To replace a lens, place your thumbs at the base of the lens and apply firm, even pressure to remove it. To insert a new lens, align it near the temple and gently press along the edges until it clicks into place without any gaps. Companies like Revant Optics and VR Wave produce a variety of lenses specifically made for all Meta frame models, including Ray-Ban and Oakley. They offer tinted, mirrored, polarized, and photochromic lenses, with prices starting at around $40.

Improve Meta AI visual descriptions

Meta has hidden a useful feature for its Ray-Ban and Oakley Meta glasses in the accessibility menu. Enhanced visual descriptions provide a more detailed description of what you’re seeing, adding details like colors, textures, the number of people in the room, and more. This feature was designed for users with low vision, but it’s truly useful for everyone. To enable it: open the Meta AI app, tap the glasses icon, then tap the settings gear icon. From there, go to the ” Accessibility ” section, then scroll down to “Detailed replies .” Once enabled, try saying, “Hey Meta, describe what I see.”

Here are a few more ways to improve your AI’s voice: In the settings, you can change your AI’s speech rate. Be sure to set it to at least 1.25. Also, you might think switching to a “celebrity voice” would be annoying, but these voices usually sound more natural than Meta’s default voice (at least to me). It also doesn’t change what Meta says to what, say, Awkwafina might say: it’s just Awkwafina’s voice saying the same thing as Meta’s.

Turn your Meta glasses into the perfect note-taking app.

My best ideas come to me while I’m washing dishes, riding my bike, or juggling—perhaps the least opportune moments for writing. So I use this simple yet effective method to turn my glasses into a hands-free organizer for jotting down thoughts. Here’s how: create a WhatsApp or Messenger group where you’re the only member. Then, whenever an idea strikes you while cooking, driving, or cycling, you can say, “Hey Meta, WhatsApp (YOUR BRILLIANT IDEA).” The result is an automatically recorded, time-stamped, searchable, and hands-free journal of all your ideas.

Keep your Meta points charged all day.

My Meta smart glasses last about eight hours on a single charge, depending on how I use them, which sounds good until I start working long hours. Since there’s no charging port on the glasses, you might think you’ll be stuck with regular glasses after the battery runs out, but the Meta can actually be used without the charging case. There are several charging options that attach to your face:

• Battery packs like the PrismXR Carina C1 attach magnetically to the frame and connect via the same external charging contacts as the cases. Each battery pack adds approximately two hours of battery life.

• If you don’t mind the cord tugging at your pocket, you can add a cable with a clip that connects to the glasses’ charger and runs to a power bank in your pocket. This will extend the life of your Meta glasses until your chosen battery runs out.

Not worthy of mention: dimming of camera backlight.

It’s no secret that you can block the indicator light on Meta glasses and still use the camera, but you shouldn’t. There may be valid reasons for doing so—for example, if you’re photographing wildlife and don’t want to scare the animals, or if you’re using the glasses to take selfies in front of a mirror—but generally, the light is there to make it clearer to others that you’re taking a photo or video, so blocking it looks unnatural.
