The Film “The Odyssey” Is Wreaking Havoc on the AMC Movie Theater Chain’s App and Website Today.

If you tried to access the AMC Theaters website or app this afternoon for any reason, you may have found yourself in line. Or maybe you still are. Whether you’re trying to buy tickets, check an existing reservation, or check the schedule for upcoming showtimes, AMC is making you wait in line. Why? Because of the movie “The Odyssey,” of course.
AMC theaters are currently in chaos.
Tickets for Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey went on sale today, throwing AMC theaters into chaos. If you were trying to get tickets, good luck, as wait times can reach up to an hour during peak hours . Anyone who’s tried to buy pre-sale tickets for anything highly advertised—be it a movie or a concert—knows how fierce the competition can be (and how horrific those online queues are). Glitches and delays are commonplace.
It’s perfectly reasonable for users to wait in line if they’re trying to buy tickets to the Odyssey . But for some reason, AMC makes everyone else wait in line, too, no matter what we’re on the site for. I opened the app this afternoon just to cancel one of my evening tickets, but I ended up in line to do it. Only after a quick Google search did I understand why AMC was acting so strangely.
However, AMC doesn’t specify this on its website or app. You’re simply placed in a queue with an estimated arrival time and a loading indicator. Once you’re “in,” you’re taken to the app’s main page. I assumed AMC would first show the page for “The Odyssey,” but no: I had to search for it myself. (By the way, I bought tickets, so I suppose the wait in line was well worth it.)
How to skip the line at AMC
If you’re trying to do anything other than buy tickets to the next Christopher Nolan film, you’ll just have to wait in line. Eventually, you’ll check in and be able to use the app as usual. (I was able to cancel my reservation without any issues.) If you’re trying to find an existing ticket to present at the theater, you might want to check your email, as that’ll be faster than waiting in line, or ask a theater representative to look up your reservation. (Although who knows how AMC’s internal systems work these days.)
