10 TV Shows Like “Big Mistakes” That You Should Watch in the Future.
In his new series, Schitt’s Creek, Dan Levy collaborates with I Love L.A. creator Rachel Sennott. It’s a comedy that, in the best tradition of crime shows, starts small and gets downright ridiculous. Laurie Metcalf plays the mother and family patriarch Linda, Dan Levy plays the closeted gay priest Nicky, and Taylor Ortega is the chaos magnet Morgan. Linda demands they buy jewelry for her dying grandmother’s final birthday, leading to a minor theft that lands them in debt to the mob. Not content with letting the family experience this only once,Netflix has renewed the series for a second season. In the meantime, enjoy other crime comedies that try, mostly unsuccessfully, to keep family life together.
Good Girls (2018–2021)
Beth, Ruby, and Annie (Christina Hendricks, Retta, and Mae Whitman, respectively) are three mothers in suburban Michigan, all struggling financially. They’re no criminal masterminds, so they hatch a plan to rob a local grocery store to solve the problem—a store that turns out to be a front for a money-laundering operation. They steal $500,000, but the gang leader whose money they unknowingly stole wants it back. Oh, and the store manager has spotted one of their signature tattoos and threatens to blackmail them. Deli Boys (2025–)
Pakistani-American journalist and producer Abdullah Saeed has long been known for his investigative reporting and Vice documentaries, many of which explore the impact of cannabis laws. This experience lends unique verisimilitude to this comedy series about two brothers—the hard-working Mir (Asif Ali) and the party-loving Raj (Saagar Sheikh)—who, after the death of their wealthy father, discover that much of the family’s wealth comes not from a chain of delicatessens but from an illegal drug operation operating behind the scenes. Alia Shawkat stars as Dory Sif, an aimless millennial who, after seeing a missing person poster for a college friend, decides to make it her mission to find Chantal (Claire McNulty), with the reluctant support of her friends. The series shifts focus from season to season, but it’s in the second season that the similarities to Big Mistakes become most apparent: initially a darkly comic take on a Nancy Drew-style detective story, the show’s characters later desperately try to cover up a largely unintentional murder. How to Get to Heaven from Belfast (2026 – )
The series “How to Get to Heaven from Belfast” was created by Irish playwright and “Derry Girls” author Lisa McGee, though that earlier and deservedly beloved show will only partially prepare you for the new version. Three high school friends from Belfast reunite after learning of the unexpected death of their fourth best friend—though she may not be dead, which is a mixed blessing, considering they all have life-destroying secrets they hoped to bury. Now they set out to investigate a possible murder mystery and find themselves embroiled in a complex web of lies, secrets, and old vendettas. Vincenzo (2021)
Vincenzo is a typical crime drama with a twist: Song Joong-ki plays Park Joo-hyun, aka Vincenzo Cassano, a Korean by birth but later adopted by an Italian family; as an adult, he becomes a lawyer and mafia consigliere. After the death of the Cassano family patriarch, his biological son attempts to restore order, forcing Vincenzo to flee to Korea to retrieve a large sum of money he had hidden. This is where things get strange and interesting: the money is hidden beneath a commercial building full of strange and eccentric tenants, and circumstances soon bring Vincenzo into conflict with a pharmaceutical conglomerate that has set its sights on the complex. Barry (2018–2023)
Bill Hader won multiple Emmy Awards for his portrayal of Barry Berkman, a depressed and anxious hitman who discovers a love for acting, leading him to seek a life outside of murder, though he’s quite good at it and continually returns to it. As Barry strives to rebuild his life on stage, the incredibly eccentric Gene Cousineau (Henry Winkler, who also won an Emmy for this role) becomes a mentor and father figure, fully supporting Barry until he discovers his protégé’s double life. Bad Sisters (2022–2024)
The dark and polished Irish comedy Bad Sisters earned several well-deserved Emmy nominations in its first year. Writer and co-creator Sharon Horgan stars as Eva Garvey, the eldest of five sisters, including Grace (Anne-Marie Duff), married to John Paul, an abusive and withdrawn husband. When he is found dead under suspicious circumstances, down-on-his-luck insurance investigator Tom (Brian Gleeson) becomes involved. We know the sisters clearly wanted John Paul dead, but did they actually do it? The Gentlemen (2024–)
It’s a Guy Ritchie-esque series inspired by a Guy Ritchie film—which speaks volumes about its tone (sophisticated, sarcastic, and ultra-violent). Theo James plays army officer Eddie Horniman (did I mention Guy Ritchie?), heir to the Horniman estate (again), who becomes the Duke of Halstead after his father’s death. He discovers his father was involved in various criminal enterprises and that his Liverpudlian brother owes millions of pounds to a drug dealer. Sticky (2024)
While it might seem questionable in taste to set a crime show in Quebec and then tie it to maple syrup, Sticky is based on a true story—the Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist of 2012. Margo Martindale ( Justified ) plays Ruth Landry, a maple syrup farmer struggling after the death of her husband and facing a greedy businessman trying to buy her land. She meets dimwitted security guard Rémy Bouchard (Guillaume Cyr), who steals a barrel or two from the warehouse where he works, and then gangster Mike Byrne (Chris Diamonthopoulos), who she realizes can provide the necessary backing for the heist. In the best tradition of shows like Fargo , the flawless plan to steal a large quantity of syrup quickly spirals out of control. Brothers Sun (2024)
A hilarious action comedy that’s part of the Netflix club of series that only last one season, The Brothers Sun stars Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh as Eileen Sun, the exiled matriarch of a Taiwanese gangster family. She arrived in Los Angeles years ago, bringing with her her son, Bruce (Sam Sung Lee), who grew up knowing little about his origins and harboring few ambitions beyond becoming a master of improvisational comedy.
