Atari is no longer the dominant force it was in the 1980s, but its catalog still defines the early history of the gaming industry. The Gamestation Go attempts to capture this heritage in a single portable device, both in appearance and gameplay. Its main draw is its game library. You get over 200 built-in games, including well-known titles like Asteroids, Breakout, Centipede, Missile Command, Tempest, and Yar’s Revenge. Most of the collection is from the Atari 2600, with a smaller number of games from the 5200 and arcade releases. There are also a few licensed additions, such as PAC-MAN and games from Jaleco and PIKO Interactive. If that’s not enough, you can expand your library with a microSD card.

The hardware is also designed with gaming in mind. It features a seven-inch color display and, instead of a single control scheme, includes a joystick, d-pad, trackball, numeric keypad, and standard buttons. There’s also a “SmartGlow” feature that illuminates the relevant controls for each game, helping with switching between different input styles. Connectivity-wise, it connects to your TV via HDMI, has Wi-Fi for updates, and runs on a built-in rechargeable battery. Its drawbacks include a simple assembly and a less-than-comfortable layout for long gaming sessions. Furthermore, the controls are period-correct, but don’t always offer modern ergonomics. However, if nostalgia and variety are your goal, the Gamestation Go offers plenty, especially at this price.
