Google’s New Gemini App for Mac Has Two Key Advantages (and One Disadvantage).

If you frequently use Gemini and have a Mac, Google has good news: the company has released a dedicated Gemini app for macOS. This has been long awaited, as Google competitors like OpenAI and Anthropic have long had dedicated Mac apps for ChatGPT and Claude .

The Gemini Mac app appears to offer many of the same benefits as other desktop AI apps. In most cases, interacting with the app is essentially the same as the web version: you ask Gemini a question or send a request, and it responds accordingly. However, there are two key advantages to abandoning the web app.

Summon Gemini using a keyboard shortcut.

First, Gemini can be accessed at any time using a keyboard shortcut. (By default , it’s Option + Space , so instead of opening the Mac app (or web app) every time you have a question or request for Gemini, you can press this keyboard shortcut for quicker access. This makes using the chatbot more convenient when you’re switching between tasks on your Mac, without having to switch between different apps or windows. Alternatively, Gemini can be located in the menu bar, so you can access it there as well.)

Ask Gemini questions about your Mac

The second advantage is that Gemini for Mac can answer questions about your Mac using contextual cues. In other words, you can ask a question about something happening on your screen (for example, “What are the three most noticeable trends in this chart?”), and Gemini will be able to answer, without having to take a screenshot and send it directly to the app.

What do you think at the moment?

However, it’s not as simple as simply opening Gemini and asking it a question: to try it, you’ll need to click “Add files and tools” in Gemini, select “Share window,” and then select the window you want to share. Gemini will then have access and be able to answer questions—provided you have the appropriate settings enabled in System Preferences > Privacy & Security . This is certainly a step up in terms of privacy, but it does introduce some complications for users who might otherwise feel comfortable granting Gemini screen access.

The Gemini Mac app can’t do anything for you.

Speaking of access, Gemini for Mac doesn’t appear to have management features like Claude’s “Computer Usage.” Therefore, you won’t be able to instruct Gemini to manage your computer and perform tasks on your behalf—though this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as these tools are vulnerable to link injection . Furthermore, Google states that Gemini for Mac also works with Nano Banana, an AI-powered image processing model, and Veo, an AI-powered video processing model, so users can create images and videos without leaving the app. Gemini is available free to all Gemini users on Mac computers running macOS 15 and above.
