10 TV Shows Like Young Sherlock That You Should Watch in the Future.

Sherlock Holmes only recently entered the public domain (at least in its entirety), and boy, are the creators going to make the most of it—at least three major Doyle-related works will be available to watch in 2026, and I’m probably missing a couple more. Intellectual property has never been a major obstacle, though, as evidenced by the hundreds of films, books, porn parodies, and so on that have been released in the nearly century since Arthur Conan Doyle’s death. All of this suggests Holmes is a resilient character, and while I wouldn’t say we need a fast-paced Sherlock prequel from Guy Ritchie, Young Sherlock is unique and quite funny. Sure, it pushes the character almost to the limit, but it still maintains at least a reasonable respect for the canon, with a well-cast lead in Hero Fiennes Tiffin and Donal Finn as Moriarty.
Here are some more entertaining and stylish historical (mostly) dramas to watch after Young Sherlock .
The Artful Con Artist (2023)
The Artful Con Artist is a sequel to Oliver Twist , in which Jack Dawkins (Thomas Brodie-Sangster of The Queen’s Gambit and Wolf Hall ) escapes from prison and becomes a surgeon; it turns out his nimble fingers are good for more than just pickpocketing. All is well until his old mentor, Fagin (David Thewlis), shows up, using their shared past to push Jack back into crime. Thewlis and Brodie-Sangster are a terrific pairing in this unexpected and funny series, as Jack is torn between his adventurous tendencies and his desire to reform. Watch The Artful Con Artist on Hulu .
“Wrong” (2021)
What sounded like a completely unnecessary Sherlock Holmes parody featuring the “Baker Street Rebels” (led here by Thaddea Graham of ” Bad Sisters “) unexpectedly wove a dark supernatural mystery into its core, exploring grief. Here, Watson (Royce Pierreson) recruits these damaged but resourceful street kids to assist with cases involving the occult, as well as the search for the aging and missing Sherlock. Holmes aside, the series functions as a darker, Victorian-era version of ” Stranger Things.” It was cancelled prematurely, but it comes to a satisfying enough conclusion.Watch “The Rebels” on Netflix .
Murdoch Mysteries (2008–)
Set in 1895, the series follows Toronto police detective William Murdoch (Yannick Bison) as he and his team solve Upper Canada’s most perplexing crimes. The chemistry between the main characters has sustained the series for 19 seasons (and counting), as has its playful approach to historical accuracy, seamlessly blending real-life figures and innovations into a blend bordering on steampunk. It may be a bit cozier than Young Sherlock , but sometimes that’s exactly what you need. Watch Murdoch Mysteries on Tubi .
A Thousand Blows (2025 – )
A spiritual sequel to Peaky Blinders from the show’s creator, this film takes us back a bit to the 1880s, when an all-female crime syndicate controlled London’s East End. It’s a true story! Erin Doherty plays Mary Carr, the leader of the Forty Elephants, a gang specializing in shoplifting and fraud. In A Thousand Blows , Mary and her gang face off against Henry “Sugar” Goodson (played by Stephen Graham, another real-life antihero), who runs an illegal bare-knuckle fighting ring. Standing between them is Hezekiah Moscow (Malachi Kirby), a recently arrived Jamaican immigrant who introduces us to this harsh world and its warring factions. Watch A Thousand Blows on Hulu .
Viennese Blood (2019–2024)
Vienna Blood creator and writer Steve Thompson previously wrote the Sherlock Holmes series starring Benedict Cumberbatch, so it’s perhaps fitting that this Edwardian crime series has Holmes in its DNA. Matthew Beard plays Dr. Max Liebermann, a student of Sigmund Freud who is recruited early on by police detective Oskar Reinhardt (Jürgen Maurer) to provide psychological insight into several grisly murders. Liebermann draws brilliant character inferences, much like Holmes, using physical evidence, only with more action and serial killings.Watch Vienna Blood on PBS Passport or buy it on Prime Video .
Death Comes to Pemberley (2013)
This isn’t a fast-paced, action-packed version of Pride and Prejudice , but like Young Sherlock, it makes some changes to the original genre. This adaptation of the novel by P.D. James, one of the most prominent detective writers of the 20th century, takes us to Pemberley several years after the events described in Jane Austen’s novel. Darcy (Matthew Rhys) and Lizzie (Anna Maxwell Martin) remain contented, though not always happy, spouses and host one of the balls for which Pemberley is famous. Along the way, Lizzie’s sister and her husband, George Wickham, travel there with Captain Denny. Wickham and Denny quarrel, disappear into the woods, and Denny is found dead. Lizzie has no time to be bored in her vast house—especially when there’s a murder to solve. Watch Death Comes to Pemberley on PBS Passport or buy it on Prime Video .
Perry Mason (2020–2022)
Speaking of Matthew Rhys, there’s this gripping and unusual series that takes Perry Mason from the books, movies, and TV series and places him in a dark and gritty Depression-era prequel. Rhys is naturally superb as a brilliant but wild-life lawyer going through a divorce and still dealing with the trauma of World War I. He’s hired to investigate the case of a kidnapped and mutilated child, which eventually turns out to be linked to corrupt police officers, local businessmen, and politicians in 1932 Los Angeles. Juliet Rylance stars as business secretary Della Street, and Tatiana Maslany as a creepy evangelist. Watch Perry Mason on HBO Max.
Monsieur Spade (2024)
An original drama from Scott Frank ( The Queen’s Gambit ) and Tom Fontana ( The Killing , Oz ), Monsieur Spade follows Sam Spade, of The Maltese Falcon fame, as he lives a quiet retirement in the south of France. All is well for the world-weary former detective—until six nuns are murdered at a nearby convent, the very one where Sam’s protégé has been living for some time. Naturally, his past catches up with him, and he’s forced to abandon his idyllic life to help solve a complex mystery that threatens his (few) loved ones. Clive Owen delivers a brilliant performance as the battered, emphysema-stricken detective, and the story feels like a worthy sequel to the original novel. Watch Monsieur Spade on Prime Video and AMC+.
The Gentlemen (2024–)
Theo James plays army officer Eddie Horniman (the name is mentioned repeatedly), heir to the Horniman estate (there it is again!), who is crowned Duke of Halstead after his father’s death. He discovers his father was involved in various criminal dealings, and his Liverpudlian brother owes millions of pounds to a drug dealer. What’s a smart, military-trained duke to do but learn to navigate the brutal underworld while maintaining his composure?Watch The Gentlemen on Netflix .
Sherlock and Daughter (2025–)
Even if the storyline deviates greatly from anything in Doyle’s works, this CW series offers perhaps the most literaryly accurate portrayal of Holmes, played by David Thewlis. He is sullen, cantankerous, and emotionally distant, which creates an even more effective contrast when Amelia Rojas (Blu Hunt) shows up on his doorstep after the death of her mother and a harrowing journey from California. Realizing that Sherlock is her father, she teams up with him to investigate an international crime cartel and, hopefully, discover what happened to her mother. The clever Amelia quickly takes the place of the missing Watson, though the series doesn’t shy away from the challenges facing a young Native American woman in Victorian London. Watch Sherlock and Daughter on HBO Max .
