I Switched to Self-Cleaning Litter Boxes and I Regret Not Doing It Sooner.

Two years ago, I reluctantly inherited a cat. The cat is both mine and not mine: Skye belongs to my daughter, who owns her the same way a pet might be “owned” by a minor, while an adult silently manages her upkeep and responsibilities. Seeing this as an opportunity to teach a child new skills, I rarely feed Skye, brush her fur, or clean her litter box. Instead, I’ve chosen the worst occupation—constantly reminding a teenager to do these things.
If you have a cat, you’re probably familiar with the problems that arise from a dirty litter box. And if you have a teenager, you know how often they resist being asked to do errands. But only if you’ve had both can you understand just how dire Skye’s litter box situation had become: a disgusting smell, litter scattered all over the floor, and a cat looking for an alternative to her unhygienic litter box. I was determined to find a solution that would address both my litter box problem and my desire to teach my child to take responsibility for their cat. So, I tested self-cleaning litter boxes that would address both Skye’s and my daughter’s issues.
I tested two self-cleaning cat litter boxes from well-known companies that sit at opposite ends of the spectrum. The first was the Petkit Purobot Ultra , a high-end self-cleaning litter box with premium features like an AI-powered camera and video recording. Its large size, futuristic shape, and automatic video camera are eye-catching, making it a good choice for owners who need a litter box for multiple cats. The second was the popular Litter-Robot from Whisker , a more discreet automatic litter box that blends better into most interiors. I used the EVO model, a more compact version of the Litter-Robot 4, suitable for single-cat owners.
Advantages and disadvantages of automatic cat litter boxes
Since the first patent for an automatic, self-cleaning cat litter box was granted in 1991 , technology has advanced significantly. You may remember litter boxes with mechanical rakes that collected waste into a container. These have since given way to drum-based models, such as the Petkit Purobot Ultra , Whisker Litter-Robot , and others you’ve likely seen, which use a rotating drum and grate system. When a cat uses the box, sensors detect when the cat has left, and the drum automatically begins a cycle. While the drum is running, clean litter is filtered through the grate, and waste is collected in a separate compartment for manual emptying.
Once my cat got used to the new self-cleaning litter boxes, the benefits became obvious: the litter was always clean, the odor was significantly reduced, and I had to throw out the scoop. Our cat’s litter box became cleaner and more hygienic.
Other benefits of a self-cleaning litter box include cleaning during unexpected absences, tracking the cat’s weight, and ultimately, saving on litter. Since automatic litter boxes clean themselves after each use, the clean litter is less likely to become contaminated with loose clumps. Plus, it can look cool. (Or it can look unsightly, depending on the model you choose and where it’s installed in your home.)
The disadvantages of switching to a self-cleaning litter box for cats include the high initial cost, the risk of choosing a low-quality counterfeit, and the fact that automatic litter boxes are not suitable for kittens (it’s generally best to wait until your cat is litter-trained, over six months old, and weighs less than a pound).
If you’ve decided to install an automatic self-cleaning litter box in your home, there are a few steps you can take to ease your cat’s adjustment. We had a shy cat who was quite shy when we switched from regular litter boxes to automatic ones, but a few steps helped her get used to it. First, we placed the new litter box next to the old one so she could associate the new one with the same spot as the old one. Then, we added some litter from the old box to the new one to help it better absorb the familiar scent. After she used the new box a few times, we got rid of the old one completely. Switching to an automatic self-cleaning box was a long-overdue decision, and I regret not doing it sooner because it’s the best decision I’ve ever made as a cat owner.
