Claude in the Fall

If you tried to access Claude for any AI-related tasks on Monday morning, you might have had no luck—or, more likely, the chatbot didn’t load. It’s not you, your internet connection, or your device: Claude isn’t working.
Anthropic confirmed the outage on Monday, citing “an increased number of errors in Claude.ai, the console, and Claude code.” At the time of writing, the company has posted four updates to the Claude status page : the first, at 11:49 UTC (6:49 AM ET), simply confirmed that an investigation had begun; the next, at 12:06 UTC, confirmed the ongoing investigation; and then, at 12:21 UTC, it reported that the Claude API was functioning properly. At that time, the company had determined that the issues were related to Claude.ai and the login and logout paths. Finally, at 1:22 PM UTC, the company confirmed that it had identified the cause of the issue and that a fix was “in progress,” though a timeline for when it would be rolled out to users is still unknown.
As with most outages, I expect Anthropic to resume Claude operations soon. Perhaps before most Americans are back online. However, the outage comes at a challenging time for the company. Anthropic made headlines last week when President Trump ordered all federal agencies to stop using its AI services after Anthropic and the Department of Defense failed to reach an agreement on how the U.S. military could use Claude in its projects. The Department of Defense wanted unrestricted access to AI, while Anthropic demanded safeguards. They couldn’t reach an agreement, but not only did the Department of Defense terminate Anthropic’s contract, but Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth also declared the company a “national security threat to the supply chain.” Therefore, no company working with the U.S. military can simultaneously work with Anthropic.
To be clear, this likely has nothing to do with this glitch. But it’s likely that more Anthropic users are experiencing similar issues now than ever before, as the incident sent Claude’s app to the top of the Apple App Store.
