Google Has Again Pushed Back the Deadline for Transferring Your Fitbit Account.

When Google acquired Fitbit in 2021, it announced that all users would eventually be required to link their devices to a Google account to continue using Fitbit features and services. Google initially set a mandatory migration deadline for 2025, then pushed it back to February 2, 2026—a date that at the time seemed final. Now, Google has granted another extension.
Now, if you’re still using an old Fitbit account (an account created before 2021), Google has extended the deadline for migrating Fitbit accounts to Google accounts for the second time, giving users until May 19, 2026, to switch to a new account.
How to switch to a Google account
For those who’ve been putting it off, the migration process itself is quite simple and only takes a few minutes. Google provides step-by-step instructions on the Fitbit support page to help users link their existing Fitbit data to their Google account.
To transfer your Fitbit account to a Google account:
-
Open the Fitbit app.
-
Sign in to your Fitbit account.
-
Click Settings and select Move Account .
-
Follow the instructions on the screen.
During the migration process, you can review and make changes to your Fitbit data and settings. Afterward, you can manage your Fitbit data through your Google account settings and the Fitbit app. If you change your mind, you can cancel the migration before the final step. As a reminder, you have until May 19, 2026, to complete the migration.
It’s worth noting that anyone who created a new Fitbit account or purchased a device in the last two years or so is already using the Google-based system. The migration requirement only applies to users with old accounts created before purchasing the device.
What does this mean for you?
This news wasn’t welcomed by everyone from the start, and it still isn’t . Many long-time Fitbit users are reluctant to link their health data to the Google ecosystem.
Users who opt out of the migration still have the option to keep or delete their data. Google has set July 15, 2026, as the final date to download or delete your Fitbit account and all associated health information. If you decide to leave the platform entirely, remember that deleting your data is the safest option in terms of privacy and security.
There also appear to be general migration issues, particularly for younger Fitbit users. Some parents report that supervised Google accounts—intended for children and teens— can’t log into the Fitbit app , creating a barrier for families who purchased devices for their children.
Despite the tweaks and complaints, the direction is clear: Google is moving forward, integrating Fitbit into its ecosystem. Whether you embrace these changes or ditch your fitness tracker, the time to decide is not yet.
