If you’ve successfully left X , you may have found a new home with Threads . But as the Threads network grows, you’ll also find that you don’t want to see everything in your feed. Maybe you’re trying to avoid spoilers for your new favorite TV show or trying to get away from the new meme that just won’t die . Either way, you can now use Thread’s Hidden Words feature to mute any keyword or emoji to remove them from your feed—at least from your feed—once and for all. (They will still show up in search.)

How to mute words and emoticons in themes

Silencing offensive words or annoying phrases takes a couple of seconds. Here’s how it works:

  1. Open the Threads app and go to your profile .

  2. Click the globe icon in the top left corner to open your privacy settings.

  3. Here, select Hidden Words .

  4. Under Custom Words and Phrases, make sure this feature is enabled. Then click Manage Custom Words and Phrases .

  5. Now add any word, phrase or emoji to the text field and click Add . You can add multiple words or emojis that you want to block, separating them with a comma.

Now click “Back” to return to the “Hidden Words” page. You can return to this page at any time to add more words to your blocked list. If you want to unmute a word, go back to the Hidden Words section, select the Manage Custom Words and Phrases option, swipe over the muted word, and click the Remove button.

Also on this page, you’ll notice the “Offensive Words and Phrases” section enabled by default. With this feature, any replies to your messages that contain offensive words or phrases will be automatically filtered to the bottom of your messages in a private “Hidden Replies” section. You won’t need to see them on your profile and they won’t show up on your feed, but they will be visible to anyone who wants to see them. If you don’t like this feature, you can turn it off in the Hidden Words section, which will allow you to get these answers.
