How to Hide YouTube Shorts From Your Feed

Whether you like them or not, YouTube Shorts are here to stay. If they want to stop them from constantly popping up in your feed, there are a few things you can do to lessen their impact on your already waning attention span. YouTube’s own option lets you hide them temporarily, but you’ll need third-party extensions to remove them permanently.

Tell YouTube you’re not interested in shorts.

The fastest way to remove YouTube Shorts from viewing in Chrome is to click the X (Not Interested) button in the top right corner of the Shorts row. But there are two things to pay attention to:

  • This is a temporary solution as YouTube will resume recommending short videos in 30 days.

  • The Not Interested button only works in Chrome on the desktop, not in the iOS or Android mobile apps.

  • Even if you remove it from the main page, the shorts will appear in the sidebar when you watch a particular video. While you can tell YouTube you’re not interested in a particular short video, you can’t remove suggestions from view.

Make YouTube Shorts disappear from mobile apps

You cannot delete all shorts in the iOS and Android apps. But you can teach the algorithm to stop showing certain short videos by highlighting the three vertical dots on each short video and selecting Not Interested from the menu. If you think some short videos are tasteless, you can click “Report” and “Submit Feedback” . To be honest, I’ve had limited success with mobile options – it’s like fighting back with a fire hose.

Block YouTube Shorts with Extensions

While Chrome can give you a little control, other browsers don’t. Chrome or not, if you really want to remove YouTube Shorts, take a look at these browser extensions and add-ons.

ShortsBlocker (Chrome and Firefox): This extension improves the YouTube experience by completely hiding shorts from your view. This includes the home page, subscriptions, search results, navigation column on the left, and video recommendations column on the right.

Unhook (Chrome, Firefox and Edge): This extension gives you more control over what you want to hide on the YouTube homepage. This setting includes the ability to hide short YouTube videos as well as other distractions such as related videos, comments, homepage recommendations, trending tab, etc.

YouTube Shorts Blocker (Chrome): This extension removes short videos from view on required pages. But it also gives you its own blacklist, allowing you to selectively block content from channels you don’t want to see on your feed. You can automatically convert Shorts videos to regular format if you want to watch certain Shorts from certain channels.

BlockYT for Safari : This Safari extension helps YouTube avoid distractions by blocking shorts, comments, and recommendations. It also works in the Safari browser on iPhone and iPad.

Like all extensions, they are created by third party developers. Use them with caution and be aware of bugs and bug fixes.
