Google Is Shutting Down Its VPN Service

Starting in 2020, Google One subscribers don’t have to look elsewhere for a VPN for online protection because the company includes VPN service as part of their subscription. Last year, this VPN was included with any Google One plan, so whether you pay Google $9.99 a month or $1.99 a month, you get a VPN.

If you’re one of the Google One users who relies on this VPN, you have bad news: Google is killing it, like many other products and services it has introduced over the years. The company told 9to5Google that it was discontinuing VPN support mainly because people weren’t using it. So, if you ‘re a fan of Google One’s VPN, you might be one of the few.

However, VPN service won’t disappear overnight. Google says it will phase out the feature “in the next few months,” although there is no exact timeline yet. However, pixel -based VPNs will still be supported . If you have a Pixel 7 or later, you’ll be able to use the VPN built right into your phone rather than through Google One. (Pixel 8 devices already had this feature.)

But someone else: you won’t be able to rely on this VPN for that long. Once Google removes it, you’ll still be able to use all the other Google One features included in your plan, just without the VPN. (At least until Google removes another feature.)

Which VPN should you switch to?

All it takes is one Google search to see many alternative options on the market. If you don’t cancel your Google One subscription right away, you’re probably not thrilled with the idea of spending more money on another VPN: If you’re looking for a VPN specifically for your Android device, you might want to find David Neild’s list. free recommendations here . This includes options such as PrivadoVPN , TunnelBear VPN and Proton VPN .

Free VPNs, however, aren’t particularly ideal: either the features are more limited than we’d like, or the service itself isn’t as private as a VPN should be. Instead, you may want to consider paid options for your next VPN: You can upgrade to Proton VPN’s paid tier for $10 per month to get features like multiple devices and faster speeds. If unlimited devices is your priority, you might want to take a look at Surfshark , which offers a variety of paid plans. Mullvad is so private that it doesn’t even ask for an email address.
