You Can Finally Send Quality Photos on Facebook Messenger

Whether you have an iPhone or Android, your smartphone is likely to take great photos. That’s why in 2024 there’s no reason your high-quality images should look crap when you send them to friends and family. Different messaging platforms handle this compression differently: iMessage and RCS, for example, allow you to send high-quality images by default, while SMS is known to degrade the quality of your photos .

However, when it comes to chat apps, it all depends on the developer. Last year, WhatsApp finally added an HD photo option for sending high-quality images to the platform. So it’s a little surprising to see that Meta’s other popular messaging service, Messenger, has also received this feature.

New features of Facebook Messenger

The company announced the change on Tuesday , along with several similar useful features. Unfortunately, there are no details about how high quality these images will be or how much compression will be applied. If this feature works the same way as WhatApp, there’s probably some compression involved, meaning that sending “HD images” prevents you from sharing uncompressed versions of your photos with friends.

On the other hand, Meta also announced that you can now send files up to 100MB in size from your phone. This feature is also similar to WhatsApp and is now becoming the best way to send full quality images to your contacts on Messenger.

Also announced on Tuesday was a new shared albums feature: When selecting multiple photos in Composer Chat, you’ll now see a Create Album option. If you already have an album, you will also have the option to add it here. Finally, you’ll now receive a new QR code that you can use to quickly add new contacts to Messenger. To use it, go to Settings and tap the QR code icon in the top left corner.

How to Send Quality Images on Facebook Messenger

To use Meta’s new HD photo option, select a photo in the chat editor, then be sure to click the HD switch in the top right corner. You can send multiple HD photos at the same time.

However, to send an uncompressed photo, you need to send it as a file. Once this feature is available to you, you will find it by clicking (+) in the chat composer and then clicking the file icon on the left side of the menu bar. Click “Select File” and select the photo you want to send. Depending on your phone, you may need to add a photo to the file management app on your device before this will work.
