How (and When) to Reboot or Factory Reset Your Roomba

Robot vacuums have become essential cleaning tools for busy homes, but they’re also technologically advanced, and technology can sometimes come with problems. You may notice that your Roomba no longer connects to Wi-Fi or is not working properly, for example. In these cases, you will need a reboot or even a factory reset.

How to Reset Roomba

According to iRobot , the device’s manufacturer, performing a “robot reset” on the Roomba will resolve most minor issues. Rebooting won’t delete your information, so your maps, schedules, and general settings will be safe.

For most newer models, you can simply open the app you use to control your vacuum, tap Product Settings , and then restart Roomba . You will need to confirm that you want to run the activity again before it starts.

If you want to do this manually or don’t have the app, press and hold the Clear button. If you have an i series, s series or Braava Jet m series, hold it down for about 20 seconds. If you have series j, it will be nine seconds. Roombas 800 and 900 series will reboot after you hold it down for 10 seconds. If you don’t have a Roomba connected to Wi-Fi (such as a 500, 600, or 700 series or Roomba e Series), you’ll have to press and hold the Home and Spot buttons for 10 seconds.

You’ll know a reboot is in progress because the light around the Clear button will light up. The reboot is similar to a basic reboot where you turn your computer off and on, which will likely fix any minor problems in the process.

How to reset your Roomba to factory settings

If your problem persists after a reboot, it may be time to go with the nuclear option: a factory reset. If you perform a factory reset, you will lose all your data. No more cards. No more connections to your smart home devices. No more schedules. No more preferences. He won’t even know what time zone he’s in anymore. The vacuum cleaner will work as if you just took it out of the box. You may want to contact iRobot customer support for troubleshooting before wiping your entire device.

You can restore your machine to factory settings from the iRobot Home app or on the device itself. If you reset your robot, your cloud data and apps will remain intact.

To do this from the app, open it and double check that your mobile device is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the vacuum cleaner. Tap the gear icon for Product Settings , then About [device name] and Remove device from account . Some devices may have the ability to store any Imprint smart cards, and if yours does, the app will alert you. Click “Save Maps” during the reset and your home map will be returned to the robot once the reset is complete.
