Gemini Finally Appears in Google Messages (for Some Users)

Google has been open about its plans to bring its Gemini AI to just about everything it can, with the exception of the base Pixel 8, which it says has some hardware limitations that prevent it from using the latest version of Gemini . One of the latest ways to get Gemini treatment is through Google Messages.

This rollout is not surprising since Google officially confirmed the addition of Gemini to Messages about a month ago. However, now it’s finally available to some Google Messages beta users, and here’s what you can expect from the new integration.

For starters, it’s only available to beta testers who have RCS enabled, are over 18 years old, and own a Pixel 6 or later, Pixel Fold, Galaxy S22 or later, Galaxy Z Flip, or Galaxy Z Fold. Other devices don’t yet support Gemini in Google Messages. Google also says you’ll need to set your phone’s language to English in places where Gemini is available in Messages , or French if you’re in Canada.

However, once you’re in beta and have Gemini, you’ll be able to do a number of things with the AI chatbot, including talking to the bot for information. You can respond to Gemini using text or image prompts, and you can even use extensions in your chats with Gemini.

If you need help composing messages, all you have to do is ask Gemini and it will provide an appropriate response that you can edit and then send as you see fit. You’ll also be able to leave feedback directly in the Messages app by long-pressing the reply you want to leave feedback on and then selecting Thumbs Up or Thumbs Down to indicate what the reply was.

Google hasn’t yet said whether it will give Gemini Advanced users access to its premium features in Messages, so we’ll have to wait for more information about the AI feature to emerge before we can say for sure. But, at least for now, you can join the Google Messages beta and test out the feature if you meet the requirements outlined above.
