Use This App to Backup Your Apple Music Library and Recover Deleted Songs

As someone who creates a lot of Apple Music playlists, both manually created and smart ones , my biggest fear is accidental deletion. About a year ago, this fear was realized when I accidentally destroyed the playlist I had compiled for a half marathon. I had to compose the entire playlist again, but it wasn’t the same. The songs weren’t in the same order as before and I couldn’t remember all the songs I’d added previously. That’s why I was super excited when I came across Hezel , an app that backs up your Apple Music library.

Hezel is easy to use. You open the app, allow it access to your Apple Music library, and click the backup button. Backing everything up takes a while. I have about 10,000 songs in my library and it took Hesel about 2-3 minutes to back them up. By doing this, you can be sure that all songs, playlists and music videos are stored securely in the application.

If you accidentally delete a song from a playlist, or even if you delete entire playlists, Hezel allows you to easily restore them. To test, I deleted a couple of my playlists and opened Hezel to see if it could restore them. The app contained my backup from a few days ago. I opened this backup and it took me a few minutes to compare it to my current Apple Music library, after which it showed the deleted playlists. I clicked the Restore button and the playlists were restored to Apple Music almost instantly.

I now have a sense of security that I didn’t have before. The only downside is that once you restore the playlist, the playlist creator’s name will change to Hezel. This is a minor irritation, but not a deal breaker for me. The developer claims that all these backups are stored on the device, and synchronization is encrypted via iCloud.

Hezel is free to download on the App Store and you can create as many backups as you want without paying for it. In the free tier, you can only restore from your three most recent backups. If you want automatic backups and the ability to restore from any of your old backups, you can purchase an in-app purchase for $5.
