You Can Now Save Drafts and Take Photos in the Threads App

Slowly but surely, update after update, Threads is becoming a reliable replacement for Twitter (X). Of course, this is taking some time: since the app’s launch in July, we’ve seen the introduction of major features like bookmarks , the ability to edit your posts , and a working web app . Now we have two more major features you’d expect from a social media app: drafts and an in-app camera.

Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, announced the new features on his Threads account . Mosseri said Threads was testing both features, but starting Thursday they will be available to all platform users to “make it easier to share ideas on the fly.”

Here’s why these basic features are important to the overall experience of using an app like Threads: When an app lacks features like saving drafts and taking photos, you need to rely on external tools to perform the same tasks. If you can’t save a draft of a post you’re thinking about, you’ll need to save it in something like the Notes app. If you want to quickly post a photo of something that’s in front of you, but the app doesn’t do it. Photo shooting support, you need to first take a photo in your phone’s Camera app and then upload the image to Threads. Of course, this does not prevent you from using the application, but it does create unnecessary obstacles on the way to it.

How to save a draft in Threads

While it’s great to have this basic functionality, it’s not entirely clear in Threads how to actually save a message as a draft. When you’ve finished typing your message, swipe down on the window. Threads will hide the composer and display a discreet pop-up letting you know your draft has been saved. To get your draft, just click on the composer icon again: Threads will automatically transfer your draft to composer so you can preview it before publishing.

Unfortunately, Threads currently only allows you to save one draft at a time. I imagine that in the future the company will provide the ability to save multiple drafts, but for now this is the only way to do this in the app. If you want to save more ideas, you’ll still have to rely on a third-party source to record your thoughts.

How to take a photo in Threads

Taking a photo in Threads is much easier. When creating a post, click the new camera icon below the text field. Give Threads access to your phone’s camera, then take a photo.
