Mix Dark and Light Mode on Mac With Gray

Love dark mode on your Mac, but not all apps? The free and open-source Gray app allows you to exclude certain apps from settings, so you can be dark in some apps and light in others.

Dark mode is quite controversial, whether people love it or hate it. However, there is room for nuance here. Perhaps you love taking notes in dark mode, but prefer to read long texts against a bright background. Maybe you just hate the way some apps handle dark mode. The benefit of Gray is that you can choose which apps use which theme, even if the apps in question don’t give you that choice.

You can download Gray from Github . First, make sure dark mode is turned on. To do this, open System Settings , go to Appearance, and make sure the Dark option is selected. Now open Gray. Click on any app and you can force it into easy mode.

Please note that your application will need to be restarted for the settings to take effect. Gray does this automatically, so make sure there is no unsaved data in any windows before you start setting it up. Any application you click will restart and open in Lite mode.

Note that you can’t do this the other way around—that is, you can’t launch in light mode and select specific apps to run in dark mode. This is due to the way Gray works – it adds a system configuration that forces light mode to be enabled. The upside to this is that you don’t need Gray to work or even be installed for the setup to continue to work once you’ve configured everything the way you like it.
