There’s a New Way to Pass the Global Entry Interview

Global Entry is a program that speeds up the customs clearance process for travelers returning to the United States, but potential participants have long faced long wait times of four to six months to even register for the service. The most common problem is scheduling interviews that must be completed in person at specific locations.

We’ve looked at many ways to speed up this process , but the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (the agency that administers the trusted traveler programs) has just added another option for travelers flying out of the country.

Global Departure Check-in is similar to existing Arrival Check-in, which allows applicants to complete an on-site interview at select U.S. airports upon returning from overseas. Departure check-in is currently only available to travelers departing from Washington Dulles International Airport outside of Washington, DC.

How to take advantage of global check-out

To use Departure Check-in, you must have a conditionally approved Global Entry application, meaning you cannot start the process at the airport. You must have an international flight ticket departing from Washington Dulles International Airport as domestic travelers are not eligible for departure check-in. Applicants must also bring a passport and a physical document showing their current address as proof of residence, such as a driver’s license, mortgage or rent statement, or utility bill.

The check-out office is located in Concourse B of Washington Dulles International Airport near Gate B41 and is open from noon to 8:00 pm daily. Travelers should arrive early and allow sufficient time to complete the process before departure. (Customs and Border Protection does not provide specific wait times.)

There are currently no specific plans to expand departure check-in to other airports. If you’re not flying through Dulles, you can still use check-in at more than 50 airports on your return if you have a conditionally approved application.
