Google Maps “Convenient Routes” Is Here
Google is finally adding a new feature to Maps that was announced a year ago . ” View Routes ” is now rolling out to iOS and Android devices and should offer a useful and convenient way to access your current routes without too much hassle.
What are Viewed Directions on Google Maps?
Handy directions are designed to allow you to view your route as well as your estimated time of arrival without having to unlock your phone. On Android they may appear as system notifications ; on iOS, Google will use Live Activity to guide you on your route.
Plus, the route preview shows you the directions you can see before you hit Start, which is useful if you’ve already set up a route but did a little walking or changed location before you start navigating. For example, let’s say you need a walking route from your hotel to a cafe. Once you enter the cafe’s address and see your estimated time of arrival and route, you can simply start walking without having to launch navigation. When viewing directions, the arrow will move on the screen as you move, and will also update the route if you choose a different path. Glanceable Directions works for a variety of modes of transport, including walking, biking, driving and public transport.
There’s nothing special about this, but it can be a useful feature if you decide to use it. Google Maps can be annoying when you pick up your phone after it’s locked. You need to unlock your phone and return to the app, while the directions you view should allow you to quickly update your route information without having to interact with your phone frequently.
How to try the destinations you are viewing
First, make sure you’re using the latest version of Google Maps. You can check by searching Google Maps in the App Store or Play Store and then clicking Update if an update is available.
Once updated, open the app, then tap your profile in the top right corner and select Settings . Tap Navigation Settings (Android) or Navigation (iOS), then scroll down to the Map Display section. Here you should find new Glanceable directions while navigating . Make sure the slider is blue to enable it.
