Five Best Free Splitwise Alternatives

Splitwise has long been my favorite expense splitting app . The app makes it easy to figure out who owes who and even works well with multiple currencies. This was surprising until recently, when Splitwise limited its free tier to the point of making it much less useful: the first couple of expenses are free to add, but the app now asks you to wait 10 seconds to add more entries (no big deal). and after four entries you won’t be able to add more for 24 hours (big problem).

This is another example of apps limiting basic free features to increase revenue. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with a $5/month premium subscription for extra features, but you might not want to pay it for the basic feature of adding a few charges per day. Luckily, there are other expense tracking apps that let you log entries for free.

Tricount allows you to keep track of who owes who without even creating an account. You can create two expense groups, for example for two separate trips or projects. For more trips, you can create an account and continue recording expenses. The app is easy to use and the free tier is good enough to cover all the needs of people looking to split the cost. The premium tier costs $3 per month and adds advanced exporting features, the ability to save your preferred cost sharing mode, and charts.

Settle Up is a reliable alternative to Splitwise.

1 credit

Settle Up is a good expense separator app for those who want to add multiple expense groups without paying. Its free tier offers much of what Splitwise used to do, but you may encounter ads. A premium subscription costs $4 per month or $20 per year, which gets rid of ads and includes the ability to upload photos of receipts. It is a reliable Splitwise alternative at a reasonable price.

Venmo now includes cost sharing

1 credit

Venmo is obviously popular for sending money to friends, but it also recently added a bill splitting feature . The benefit is that payments are also made in one app, making it easier to check the amount you owe and pay. Venmo is a great alternative to Splitwise if most of your friends also use Venmo, but not so much if you’re on an international trip with friends from areas where Venmo doesn’t work.

Splid is a cost-sharing app without a subscription.

1 credit

Splid is a good expense splitting app for people who hate recurring payments. The app allows you to record expenses in one group for free, and you can continue to delete or edit that group for free, but adding additional groups incurs a one-time fee of $4 to unlock an unlimited number of groups or $3 for a two-group limit.

SplitMyExpenses is a simple web-based alternative to Splitwise.

If you don’t like Google Sheets’ user interface for tracking expenses, you might also want to consider SplitMyExpenses. This is a great web-based expense separator that supports multiple currencies. You can add as many expense entries as you like and set up your own split percentage based on who owes what. It has paid tiers that allow you to automatically scan receipts and add credit cards or bank accounts to record your expenses. The biggest drawback at the moment is the lack of mobile apps, which could be a deal breaker.
