How to Clean or Replace Microwave Oven Filters (and How Often You Should Do It)
Although the microwave oven is relatively low-maintenance, it does require occasional attention. If you clean up any spills or messes as soon as you make (or see) them, and wipe down the interior and exterior from time to time, you won’t have to spend much time keeping it in working order. However, you should clean your microwave’s grease filter periodically, depending on how often you use it. Additionally, your microwave may have a carbon filter that cannot be cleaned. Here’s how to find both types of microwave filters and clean or replace them.
How to Find and Clean a Microwave Oven Grease Filter
First, only over-the-range microwaves have filters, so if you have a countertop model, you’re out of the question.
The microwave grease filter is usually located on the underside of the appliance and is easy to remove: be sure to unplug the microwave before starting. Most grease filters slide out immediately, although some models may require you to unscrew or detach them first. If in doubt, consult your owner’s manual.
Once the filter is removed, fill a sink or basin with hot water, add a couple drops of liquid dish soap and let it soak in until you can easily wipe off the dirt. If the dirt doesn’t budge, add 1/4 cup of baking soda to the soapy water and let it sit a little longer. You can also try scrubbing it gently with a dish brush. When the dirt is finally clear, rinse the filter with clean, warm water, then let it air dry before replacing it and plugging the microwave back in.
Most manufacturers recommend cleaning your microwave grease filter every one to three months, although again, this depends on how often you use the appliance.
How to find and replace a microwave oven’s carbon filter
Most larger range microwaves use a carbon filter in addition to a grease filter—or at least you have the option of using one. Ideally, microwaves are vented so that exhaust fumes escape to the outside , but depending on the configuration of your kitchen and home, this may not be possible. If this is the case and your microwave is internally vented, the carbon filter is useful for removing cooking odors and should be replaced approximately every six months .
To do this, start by turning off the microwave. Most carbon filters are located on the top of the microwave, behind the vent panel. If you don’t see yours there, check your owner’s manual.
Most vent panels are held in place by screws , so you will have to remove them before lifting the panel and then removing the carbon filter. Discard the old filter and replace it with a new one that is compatible with your microwave oven model. You will also find this information in the manual. Once the new charcoal filter is in place, screw the vent panel back on, plug in the microwave, and get back to heating up the leftovers.
