Gemini Will (Likely) Replace Google Assistant
Google’s artificial intelligence models are being rolled out to everyone in the US through the new Gemini app for Android and as a feature of the Google app for iPhone. Until recently , Gemini was known as Google Bard . Gemini is available for free, but there is also a paid plan called Gemini Advanced .
A slow goodbye to Google Assistant?
Google is moving up the AI chain by improving Bard, leading to the launch of Gemini . In news that may not be all that surprising, Google is letting you replace Google Assistant with Gemini on Android. This follows recent news of major layoffs within the Google Assistant team and the subsequent removal of a long list of Assistant features .
Once you install the Gemini app, you can launch it the same way you launch Google Assistant on your Android phone. Google says you’ll be able to use Gemini by pressing the power button, swiping a corner on some phones, or simply using the “Hey Google” voice command. You can submit requests by typing them into the Gemini app, using voice commands, or sending images to the AI assistant.
Things will be different on your iPhone, as Apple doesn’t allow people to replace Siri as the default voice assistant. Instead, Gemini will be available as a toggle in the Google app.
What do Geminis actually do?
Gemini is Google’s take on generative artificial intelligence , meaning it can do everything these types of services have become famous for. You’ll be able to see the overlay every time you launch Gemini and ask the AI assistant to create something for you. Popular uses include creating a resume, writing emails, signatures, or asking for more information about blog posts you read.
You can also create images using Gemini – its capabilities are not limited to text. Google says you’ll be able to take a photo of your flat tire and ask Gemini to help you fix it. The assistant can also help you plan events, create shopping lists, or write messages you might not know how to write, such as goodbye notes or birthday wishes.
If you’re worried about losing Google Assistant functionality, you may not have anything to worry about. Google says common Assistant features like calling, smart home control, and reminders will work with Gemini. There are likely some features missing, but Google says it will add more Assistant features to Gemini in the future. It may be a while before Gemini can completely replace Assistant, but it looks like a new era is about to begin for Google products.
