Best New Series to Stream This Week

Maya Erskine and Donald Glover star in Mr. and Mrs. Smith , this week’s most intriguing new series. There’s also a new season of Feud , which details Truman Capote’s run-in with a group of high-society ladies, the Chilean sitcom Baby Bandito , and a new season of Farmer Wants a Wife . I also added a couple of older shows that are excellent.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith

This Prime original series shares the same title as the 2005 film starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, but it’s a far cry from the source material. In this version of the story, the Smiths ( Pen15 ‘s Maya Erskine and Atlanta ‘s Donald Glover) are a pair of intelligence agents who get married for real to make their secret identity bulletproof. But feelings develop between two opposites; complex feelings. Each episode details the dangerous case the couple is working on, as well as their equally dangerous marriage.

Feud: Capote vs. Swans

The second season of Ryan Murphy’s anthology tells the true story of writer Truman Capote’s conflict with a group of rich and powerful wives. While researching his seminal 1966 book In Cold Blood, Capote spent countless hours among the scum and murderers of the Midwest, but it wasn’t until he spilled the literary tea among the social cognoscenti that Capote understood what “ruthless” meant. Directed by Gus Van Sant and starring ChloĆ« Sevigny, Diane Lane, Calista Flockhart, Molly Ringwald, Demi Moore and Naomi Watts, Capote vs. the Swans is a must-see.

Baby Bandito

This Spanish-language series makes a hell of a real-life robbery that happened in Chile in 2014. Over the course of Baby Bandito’s eight fast-paced, funny chapters, Chilean skateboarder Kevin Tapia falls in love, deceives a crime lord known as “The Butcher,” and pulls off the heist of the century, making tens of millions of dollars with the help of his friends. Getting the money turns out to be easier than keeping it as both cops and criminals pursue Little Bandito and his girl around the world, and his crew can’t help but flaunt their new wealth on social media.

Clone High , Season 2

The first season of Clone High aired for one season on MTV in 2003. It was canceled after the portrayal of Mahatma Gandhi caused an international outcry. But the creators of Clone High have apparently spent the last 20 years being edgy without being crap, because the new and improved Clone High has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and has yet to spark any protests or hunger strikes. The show tells the story of a high school populated by clones of historical figures like Abraham Lincoln and Frida Kahlo (but not Gandhi) through crude animation and a script funnier than you’d expect.

Farmer Wants a Wife , Season 2

There’s probably no TV show that’s less geared toward me than Farmer Wants a Wife, but I like to subvert expectations, so I’m going to watch every episode of season two, starting tonight with episode 1. Next up is reality TV. romantic adventures of four handsome farmers. Each farmer chooses five townspeople to live with them on their farm and wear straw hats, flip-flops, or whatever people do on farms. Through this strict process love is achieved. Devil’s Hour (2022)

Too many people slept on Prime’s The Devil’s Hour , a six-part British supernatural crime drama released in 2022, but it deserves an audience beyond a small niche. The “Devil’s Hour” of the title takes place between 3 and 4 a.m., when troubled protagonist Lucy Chambers wakes each night with nightmarishly specific visions, but Lucy and her nightmares are only part of an elaborate, slow-paced story that carefully builds up to a surprising and frightening ending.

Julia (2022)

This Max original series details the fascinating life of chef Julia Child over two seasons. It opens with the publication of Mastering the Art of French Cooking and goes on to tell how this eccentric and boisterous woman used a local PBS cooking show to become the most famous celebrity chef in history. The pieces in “Julia” come together like the ingredients in “Children’s Wine” : the acting is superb (especially Sarah Lancashire as the iconoclastic title character), the script is witty and clever, and the production design perfectly reflects the time period. I bet the snacks on set were especially delicious, too.

Queer Eye , Season 8

Six new episodes of Queer Eye are now available on Netflix. If you’ve seen the show, you’re probably already watching it, but if you haven’t, now is the time to dive into it. the cast wasn’t all that charming and the presentation wasn’t always empathetic or tolerant. This is a heart-wrenching, transformative TV show that is made with honesty and care and completely transcends the genre of “realism.”
