CES 2024: ASUS’s Latest Gaming Phone Is Thinner and Lighter Than Ever Before

ASUS unveiled quite a few things during CES 2024, including new PC parts designed to make PC building even easier. However, perhaps one of the most interesting announcements was the presentation of the ROG Phone 8 series, which combines a lighter and thinner design with the powerful gaming potential of the ROG line.

The ROG Phone 8 series will be released in regular and Pro versions, allowing gamers to decide exactly which tier they want to buy. Both devices will be powered by a 3.3GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor and up to 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM. Both the devices will also offer 12GB RAM variants and will launch with Android 14 and ROG UI.

The ROG Phone 8 will have a maximum storage capacity of 256GB, while the ROG Phone 8 Pro will have a maximum storage capacity of 512GB. Each will feature a 6.78-inch Samsung Flexible AMOLED display with FHD+ resolution and a resolution of 2400 x 1080 pixels. These displays will have a maximum brightness of 1600 nits, support HDR10, a maximum refresh rate of 165Hz and a minimum refresh rate of 1Hz.

These new gaming phones will also support Fast Charge 5.0 and PD charging, and will have a maximum battery capacity of 5,500mAh, which should provide plenty of juice even while gaming.

This is also the first time ASUS has included a 3x telephoto lens on the ROG Phone, which will come with built-in optical stabilization that will help you achieve sharp results in your images. The 50MP primary camera will use a Sony image sensor, while the ROG Phone 8 will also feature a 13MP ultra-wide-angle camera. Lastly, the 32MP ultra-wide-angle selfie camera should be more than capable of capturing high-quality selfies right on the device.

ASUS will also launch a Pro Edition with 24GB RAM and 1TB internal storage, and both high-end ROG Phone models will feature LED matrix displays on the back. Prices will vary between models, but the cheapest will start at $1,099.99, while the more expensive Pro Edition will cost $1,499.99.

The ROG Phone 8 series also comes with some AI features such as AI-generated wallpapers as well as AI features that can help capture text and gameplay more efficiently. As usual, the ROG Phone 8 is largely focused on giving you a great mobile gaming platform to work on, although ASUS has added some extra features like a new telephoto lens to help it compete with more mainstream smartphones like the iPhone 15 Pro Max and Pixel 8 Pro .
