How to Check Battery Life on Your AirPods

Checking how much charge is left in your AirPods isn’t as easy as checking your iPhone’s battery. Depending on which device your AirPods are paired with, the steps will be different. Before we begin, make sure your AirPods are running the latest firmware .

If you’re reading this from an iPad or iPhone, follow these steps to check your AirPods battery (the steps are the same for both iOS devices):

  • Step 1: Connect AirPods to your iOS device. Start with your AirPods in their case with the lid closed and place them next to your iOS device.

  • Step 2: Go to Settings > Bluetooth and make sure Bluetooth is turned on.

Test your AirPods case battery without an iOS device

You won’t get the percentage without an iOS device, but it’s a quick and easy way to check your battery level. Just follow these steps:

  • Step 1: Take your AirPods out of the case.

  • Step 2: Open the case and look at the status indicator. Green means the earbuds are fully charged, while yellow means the case is still charging your AirPods.

Test your AirPods battery without a case

You may not always carry your charging case with you, and that’s okay. There’s still a way to check the battery life of AirPods without them if you have an iOS device.

  • Step 1: Make sure your AirPods are connected to your iOS device.

  • Step 2: Edit your home screen by adding widgets by holding a blank part of the screen until the apps start shaking and it will look like the image below.

Use the optimized battery charging feature to get more power

If you have AirPods Pro, AirPods Pro 2, or AirPods 3, you can use the Optimized Battery Charging feature to extend your battery life and avoid draining it as quickly. This feature learns your charging habits to extend battery life. It’s usually turned on by default, but if it’s not, you can turn it on in the AirPods settings menu.
