How to Soft Reboot Your Google Home

Google Home devices such as Google Nest Minis, displays, and speakers generally work seamlessly to help you use Google Assistant in your home or office. However, sometimes they fail, and when this happens, the best first step is a soft reboot.

Why Google Home May Need a Reboot

The most likely problem that the Google Hub may encounter is a loss of Wi-Fi connection. In some cases, Google Assistant does not respond even when Wi-Fi is working. No matter what problems you’re having with your hub, the first step is usually a soft reset, also known as a power cycle.

How to turn Google Home off and on

Turning power on and off is as simple as unplugging the hub, speaker, etc., either from the power connection to the hub itself or from the power cord to the outlet. Leave it unplugged for at least a minute and then plug it back in. The hub will take a minute to come online again, playing a short chord of notes and flashing the front panel of the hub to indicate progress.

Enabling your modem and router as an additional step

If this does not solve the connection problem, you may need to restart your modem and router, as well as your speaker. This involves repeating the same process with your modem, unplugging it, and then plugging it back in so the power cycles on and off. This will force Wi-Fi to reconnect to the entire system.

As a last resort, consider doing a factory reset.

If this still doesn’t solve the problem, it’s time to consider additional measures. Google Home is widespread and well documented, so you’ll likely find some solutions by searching online. It’s also worth considering connecting to Google’s support team, which is always available via chat or phone. As a last resort, you may want to consider resetting your hub to factory settings.
