Every Browser Should Have the New Opera GX Panic Button

The Internet is a wild place. Some of them are suitable for consumption in any environment, but most of them are NSFW for one reason or another. Whether you’re browsing the dark side of the Internet at home or at work, there may be times when no one should see your screen—and if they do, you could be upset, chewed out, or fired.

But what are you going to do: look only at what the people around you expect from you? Do not make me laugh. Heck, you have the right to watch Netflix at work. So the only thing you can do is watch in existential horror, ready to shut down your computer at the first sign from your boss.

It should not be. Opera GX has a new feature called the ” panic button “. With the click of a button, Opera mutes every tab you have open in your browser and hides all windows, replacing them with a preset set of boring SFW options. This way, if someone walks into the room you’re browsing, you can “panic” your computer into a socially acceptable state.

How to use the Opera GX panic button

Panic button is now available in Opera GX ; To use it, make sure you have the latest version of your gaming browser installed on your Mac or PC. (This won’t be available in the standard Opera browser, just an FYI.) With Opera GX open, go to Settings, then under GX , scroll down and click Early Bird . In this section, you can enable features that are currently being tested and are not available in the app by default. It just so happens that the panic button is one of these functions. When you click Early Bird , all testing functions will be enabled, not just the panic button. Review the other options to see if you need them in your browser. If not, disable them and then click Restart to complete your selection.

Now that the panic button is enabled, give it a try! Just press F12 and Opera GX will by default randomly select one of the following links to replace the currently open windows:

  • YouTube

  • Twitter

  • Wikipedia

  • Google Docs

  • Twitch

  • Reddit

  • Gmail

  • Github

  • Google News

  • Steam

These options may be fine for viewing at home, but if you use Opera at work, your boss might raise an eyebrow when they see YouTube or Twitch on your screen. Luckily, you can customize this list to include any sites you want. Just go back to Settings, then click the Panic button just above the Early Bird option. Add any new sites you want to the rotation, and edit or remove the defaults.
