How to Save Time and Money When Renovating Your Bathroom, According to Contractors

Bathrooms are some of the most challenging and disruptive rooms in the home to update. Whether it’s a remodel or a renovation , a broken bathroom is incredibly inconvenient, especially if it’s the only one in the family.

So when you get to the point where this type of work becomes unavoidable, you’ll probably want to get it done quickly and keep costs down. To help you along the way, here are three expert tips to help you save time and money when renovating your bathroom.

How to save time and money on your bathroom renovation

According to a recent survey conducted by Toolstation , it typically takes a professional about 8.5 days to complete a complete bathroom remodel, and about 22 days for the average DIYer to complete the same job. Of course, a lot depends on the amount of work and the experience of the master, but when it comes down to it, even eight days without a working bathroom is a long time.

Luckily, there are ways to help this process go smoothly without going over your budget. Toolstation asked hundreds of bathroom contractors for advice, and here are their top three tips :

Stick to the original layout

“Keep the layout as close to the original as possible,” Toolstation spokesperson Rhiannon Moore tells Lifehacker via email. “This avoids the need to re-route pipes and drains, especially in the toilet, as this is the largest pipe that needs to be installed.”

Empty the bathroom before starting work

Don’t leave cleaning your bathroom to the last minute. “You should prepare the area in advance,” Moore explains. “This will save the handyman time clearing out the space.” Instead, they can get to work right away.

Come with a plan

“If you have a clear plan and know where everything will be located before you start, it will make the installation process easier,” says Moore. “Problems can be identified early and we can think of solutions or alternatives, reducing delays.”
