Everything You Can Do With Apple Watch Without IPhone

Apple Watch is designed to work with your iPhone, but you don’t need an iPhone to use Apple Watch. Okay, you’ll need an iPhone to pair and set up the device, but after that your Apple Watch can work as a standalone device, at least for a variety of tasks, even if you have a Wi-Fi-dependent GPS model. No, it won’t be as feature-rich or useful as when your iPhone is within reach, but your watch can do a lot on its own.

What can you do with Apple Watch if your iPhone is not at hand?

Many of the built-in features of your Apple Watch will work without being connected to your iPhone. In fact, you may find that you can do almost everything you need without your phone, especially if you can connect to Wi-Fi from time to time. Of course, an Apple Watch with cellular will be more useful when you’re on the go, since it will still have a connection in places where there’s no Wi-Fi.

However, even if you have a GPS-only Apple Watch, you might be surprised at how much you can get by without your phone.

  • Listen to music . If you have a Wi-Fi connection, you can stream music from your watch to connected Bluetooth devices, including AirPods. Even without a connection, you can play music downloaded to your Apple Watch. ( You’ll just need to set this up in advance .)

  • Listen to podcasts or audiobooks . You can also download podcast episodes or audiobooks to Apple Watch using the corresponding iPhone apps. If you’re connected to Wi-Fi, you can stream them too.

  • Make phone calls . If your carrier offers Wi-Fi calling, you can use Apple Watch to make cellular calls even when your iPhone isn’t nearby. And of course, you can make FaceTime Audio calls to anyone as long as you’re connected to Wi-Fi.

  • Download apps : You can download apps directly to Apple Watch from the watchOS App Store.

  • Sending messages : You can send iMessage from your Apple Watch.

  • Control your smart home . With the Home app, you can control your smart home accessories.

  • Use any application that supports Wi-Fi . Any third party app that requires a network connection will also be available via Wi-Fi.

  • Use a walkie-talkie . You can use the Walkie Talkie app to communicate with other Apple Watch users.

  • Check the weather : The weather app will work when connected to Wi-Fi.

  • Set up Wi-Fi networks . If you’re in a new place with just your Apple Watch, you can connect to its Wi-Fi network without having to use your iPhone. You can also forget about networks if you don’t want to connect at all.

Next time you hit the road, try leaving your iPhone at home if you can—your Apple Watch may be more than capable of doing what you need it to do without all the distractions of a computer that fits in your pocket.
