Pop-Tarts Are the New Toast

I do a Pop-Tart at least once a year and am currently performing at Rockette level. You can use them to make holiday pie crusts , an ice cream sandwich , or a twisted Pop-Tart to congratulate someone you love. They also make incredible toast.

Unlike regular toast, a Pop Tart brings something special to the table: a flavorful strip of jam or icing on the inside and a layer of frosting on the outside. Their flavors can range from a simple strawberry frosting to more elaborate French toast. But that doesn’t mean you can’t add more flavor.

It was social media that initially inspired me to butter my strawberry pie. Naturally, I opted for salted butter. (Whether this is an obvious step is up for debate, but as a general rule, if it’s an ingredient, use unsalted butter; if it’s a filling, always use salted butter with an extra pinch of salt.) Without exaggeration, I can tell you. that it was a revelation. The butter brought out the flavor of the baked goods and the extra salt really made the strawberry jam sing. Once I got over how angry I was about not putting salt on my Pop-Tarts all this time, I was able to think clearly about other toppings.

I prefer the toasted boxed baked goods, so I tossed a couple more in the toaster and rummaged through the cupboards and refrigerator for new pies and fillings. Nutella spread on a strawberry Pop-Tart is reminiscent of a piece of chocolate-covered strawberry. Peanut butter adds a fresh vibe to PB&J. Eating lemon curd with a strawberry pop tart is like eating breakfast on a bright summer day.

A few more combinations I’m looking forward to:

  • Sharp Cheddar Cheese on Crispy Apple Pop-Tart
  • Cream cheese on Pop-Tart “Wild berry”
  • Bacon on Egg Frosted Maple Pop-Tart
  • Peanut butter and sliced banana on a cherry pop tart
  • Cinnamon and salted butter on a blueberry pop tart

There are no restrictions on possible topping and tart combinations. Keep the toppings sweet, or bring out your kinky side with some savory toppings. The best part is that there are two pies in each sleeve, so you have two chances to get a taste.
