Motorola’s New Razr Is the Cheapest Way to Get a Foldable Smartphone

The Razr was the defining phone of the noughties. If you had one of Motorola’s iconic flip phones, you were cool . These days, however, the Razr name mostly evokes feelings of nostalgia. You might even be surprised to learn that Motorola now sells a line of foldable smartphones under this name. Branding issues aside, the best thing about the newest Razr is its price – it’s officially the cheapest way to buy foldable phones.

Motorola’s latest foldable Razr isn’t the most powerful or the most feature-rich. That’s likely why the company has set the suggested retail price at $699.99, which is $300 cheaper than the $999.99 Razr+ . For that $700, you’ll get a rollable smartphone with a 6.9-inch 1080p 144Hz main display, a 1.5-inch front display, a Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 chip, 128GB of storage, 8GB of RAM, and a battery capacity 4200 mAh. It’s a solid list of features, and while the front display may be small, it allows you to check your phone in small chunks, reducing the number of times you need to open the device.

The Razr lacks some of the Razr+’s flagship features, including a much larger 3.6-inch front display that can do much more than its smaller sibling, as well as a faster Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip. The phones have the same 6.9-inch OLED displays are open, but the Razr+ has a higher refresh rate of 165Hz.

However, not everyone is leaning towards the Razr+. For some reason, Motorola decided to give the cheaper Razr a larger 64MP camera, while the Razr+ only gets a 12MP main camera. Additionally, the cheaper Razr has a larger battery than the Razr+’s 3,800mAh battery, meaning it should theoretically last longer on a charge. A slightly slower refresh rate, older chipset, and much smaller front display may also help these stats.

If you’re okay with some of those sacrifices (and maybe a few of those wins), the new Razr is the cheapest way to get into foldable smartphones. Although, to be fair, even the Razr+ doesn’t cost as much as some other foldable phones—the Razr+ and Galaxy Z Flip 5 typically cost $1,000, but larger foldable phones like the Galaxy Z Fold 5 or Pixel Fold retail for around $1,799 dollars.

The new Razr officially goes on sale on October 19, but you can pre-order it now with $100 off, which works out to $599.99. And the Razr+ is also $100 off, so if you’re interested in its larger front display and faster chipset, you can save some money too.
