An Out-of-Touch Adult’s Guide to Children’s Culture: What Is “exposing Your Gyat for a Rizzler”?

Remember when you were a kid and you told the same stupid joke over and over again until everyone got mad at you? And irritation will make the joke even funnier? But only for you? So would you just say it more? And everyone else was thinking, “ Will you please shut up already?” Well, kids still do it, but now it’s even worse because they use memes.

Viral Video of the Week: “Expose Your Gyat for a Risler”

A real virus spreads fast, gets out of control, and makes everyone sick—and so is this week’s viral video , “Expose Your Gyat for a Risler.”

In the short clip, the Fortnite character dances while a squeaky child’s voice sings lyrics with hyper-specific Gen Z slang over music taken from Suicidal Idol’s ” Ecstasy .” It’s extremely annoying, at least to me, but kids seem to love it (or at least love to hate it). The video, posted about a week ago on TikTok by user ovp.9, has been viewed millions of times, and many of the sing-alongs and responses it generated have been viewed and shared millions more times. In the unlikely event that you want to see more of this, check out the roughly 40,000 uses of the original audio on TikTok (but do it quickly before Rizzler disappears down a memory hole like ” one, two, buckle my shoe .”)

Here are the words: “Put your gyatt out for the risler. You’re such a skibidi. You are such a phantom tax. I just want to be your sigma. Damn it, come here. Give me Ohio.”

After extensive research, I deciphered what it all meant. This is generally similar to the “slang overload” memes that were popular a few years ago. Words are meant to be unclear. It’s one of those things where if you get the joke, the joke is on you. I understand about 90% of this, but only because I write this column every week.

  • Sticking out your gyat : Originally gyat or gyatt meant something like “damn” and was used as an interjection when you see a sexy person. But the meaning of the word “gyat” was transformed into something like “attractive prey.”
  • Rizzler : This is a play on the word rizz, which is slang for charisma . The singer identifies himself as a person with a rizz – a rizzler.
  • Skibidi : A reference to the annoying viral cartoon series on YouTube called Skibidi Toilet. »
  • Fanum Tax : This film takes a deep dive into online children’s culture. This is a reference to a joke by Twitch streamer Phanum. He apparently takes some food from the plate of anyone who eats near him and calls it the “Fanum tax.”
  • Sigma : Sigmas are an internet-made category of men who are neither alphas nor betas, but cooler than both. This is really stupid.
  • “Ohio” : Ohio is a reference to the state. In meme parlance, this place is considered almost supernaturally terrible.

A New Male Genre Is Coming: Meet the iDubbbz-Conner Man

There is a growing trend among young people to wear a mullet and mustache, like half of Hall and Oats did in the 1980s. Two of the most famous examples of this microtrend (and the people who gave it its name) are YouTubers Kurtis Conner and iDubbbz . After Twitter user @custardloaf identified him in a tweet that read: “So tired of seeing people of this genre,” Idubbbz’s responded with a photo of the couple and wrote: “ We are NOT a genre. We are real people with real feelings.” But this is obviously a genre, but not a new one.

Young people ironically adopting uncool fashion choices have been around for so long that there is no name for it yet. The specific choices change: 15 years ago it was millennial hipsters wearing mustaches and 70s T-shirts, and before that it was the norm-core generation, punks who dressed in the most boring clothes you could buy in K- Mart. . The through line of all these bands is the combination of a completely out-of-fashion style with something incongruous that says, “I’m doing this on purpose.” Normal people wore punk rock hairstyles and fake Izod shirts. Hipsters of the early 2000s wore expensive designer glasses. In Idubbz-Conner’s case, visible tattoos mark their style as “ironic” so that no one mistakes them for a couple of dorks from Montreal.

What is a “sidewalk princess”?

In the 1990s, the explosive popularity of roller skating is said to have collapsed with the following homophobic joke: Question: What’s the worst thing about roller skating? Answer: Tell your parents that you are gay.

It seems like today’s youth are trying to do the same thing with those expensive, dangerous, too-high-riding pickup trucks that were built for work or off-road driving, but have never seen either. They were nicknamed “sidewalk princesses.”

This term has been around since before the internet became popular, but is now being used more and more online and will hopefully negatively influence every suburbanite’s decision to purchase a 250 from a Ford dealership. Pranksters on Reddit like r/shittycarmods share hilarious photos of street princesses like this truck with a special hitch that won’t fool anyone , or this monster , or this little guy who needs a step to open the hood. .

What is a “gamer dent”?

“Gamer dent” or “headset dent” are marks left on a gamer’s head after wearing a headset for a long time. It’s a real thing, but it’s harmless and temporary. Like the fingerprint of a wedding ring, a headset that is too tight and worn for too long may leave an imprint on the skin, but it does not change the shape of the skull. The gamer dent will go away if you take a shower, massage your head, or simply leave phones turned off for a few hours. Odd dents sometimes appear on turtles too, and are usually nothing to worry about unless it’s a sign of a skull tumor .
