Kraft Singles Are Being Recalled for a Pretty Stupid Reason.

Since they first appeared in the dairy aisle in 1965 , Kraft Singles have been a refrigerator staple in the United States. Part of the appeal of the American pasteurized cheese product is its affordability and portability, as the slices come individually wrapped in thin plastic film.

But after decades of use, it’s that shiny plastic packaging that’s causing a voluntary recall of about 83,800 cases of Kraft Singles American cheese , according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) . Here’s what you need to know.

Why are Kraft Singles being recalled?

Kraft Heinz announced a voluntary recall after several customers complained that plastic wrap was stuck to cheese slices after they removed the individual wrappers. At least six of those complaints came from people who said they ended up choking or choking on the plastic. As of September 20, no serious health problems or injuries related to this problem have been reported, the FDA notes .

According to a statement from Kraft Heinz , there was a problem with one of the company’s packaging machines that caused a thin strip of separate plastic film to remain on the slices even after the wrapper was removed.

“If the film adheres to a slice and is not removed, it may be unpleasant and potentially pose a vomiting or choking hazard,” the company said in a statement. Although the packaging machine has now been repaired, Kraft Heinz is recalling all slices that may have been affected by the problem “as a precautionary measure.”
