Why Your TV Remote Still Doesn’t Work With New Batteries

While there are many smart TVs and streaming apps that let you make choices using your phone, most TVs still come with remote controls that turn the TV on and off, adjust the volume, and switch functions, among other things.

So let’s say your remote stops working, or slows down significantly, or gets to the point where you have to press the button very hard four times before anything happens. You try to change the batteries – maybe even twice – but it still doesn’t work properly. Here are a few reasons why this might be happening and how to fix them.

Why does the TV remote control not work after changing the batteries

Of course, TV remotes vary by brand, feature, and age, but here are a few of the most common reasons why they don’t work properly, even with new batteries:

New batteries were installed incorrectly

Double check your new batteries to make sure the positive (+) and negative (-) terminals match the corresponding labels on the remote control. While you’re there, check the expiration dates on the batteries to make sure they’re still good.

Battery compartment is dirty

Remove the batteries and inspect the compartment for dust, debris, or signs of battery leakage or corrosion. If you find any of the above, start by cleaning with a dry Q-tip or toothbrush.

To deal with battery corrosion, soak a clean Q-tip in isopropyl alcohol and then use it to remove any deposits from the compartment, especially from battery contact points. This previous Lifehacker post has more detailed instructions.

TV needs to be rebooted

This may be a problem with your TV , not the remote. Always start with the simplest solution, which in this case is to unplug the TV from the electrical outlet, wait five minutes, and then plug it back in. You may also need to press the small “power” button on the TV itself for the remote control. work.

Some TVs have a factory reset feature , but as with other electronics, this will most likely override any changes you have made to the settings.

TV remote control sensor is dirty

If you haven’t already, wipe the remote control sensor on the front of the TV to make sure that dust or dirt doesn’t cover it and interfere with the remote’s operation. While you’re doing this, also wipe down the signal emitter on top of the remote control.

TV software may be outdated

If you have a smart TV, check if it has the latest software and update it if necessary.

Remote control infrared signal may not work

Point your phone’s camera at the emitter at the top of the remote control , and then press any button on the remote control. You should see a red light that may blink and/or dimly glow on your phone’s screen. If you don’t see a red light and you’re sure the batteries are new, installed correctly, etc., the remote probably needs to be replaced.
