You Can Finally Fix Broken Xbox Controllers Yourself

Traditionally, Microsoft offers one solution for repairing a broken Xbox controller out of warranty: buy a new one. Of course, there have been third-party repair solutions for a while, but until now official details have been unavailable. Now the tide has changed: Microsoft is now selling repair kits for Xbox controllers, which means you can fix your broken controller at home.

What Xbox controller parts does Microsoft sell?

If you have an Xbox Wireless Controller (the one that came with your Series X|S console) or an Xbox Elite Series 2 Controller , you can purchase the following replacement parts from the Microsoft Store :

Microsoft says you can repair your controllers even if they’re under warranty, and your warranty won’t be voided unless you damage the controller while trying to repair it. However, the parts are “destined” for out-of-warranty repairs, as standard controller issues should be covered by the one-year limited warranty.

Xbox wireless controller parts cost anywhere from $20 to $35, and depending on what’s broken, you can find a pretty expensive fix. A brand new controller costs $60, which isn’t much more expensive than, for example, replacing a set of buttons and a top case.

On the other hand, an Xbox Elite Controller Series 2 repair is probably worth the money. It costs about $140 if you buy directly from Microsoft, and the cost of replacement parts ranges from $24 to $60. You will almost always end up saving money by trying to repair a replacement Elite controller.

Microsoft offers a one-year parts warranty for these Xbox controllers. If you end up ordering parts but not using them, you can return them within 60 days. Unfortunately, Microsoft does not sell individual repair parts, so even if you only have one button damaged, you will have to buy the entire repair kit.
