Finally You Can Use Whatsapp on Multiple Phones

WhatsApp may be very popular, but the app has always lagged behind when it comes to multi-device support. Not too long ago , you couldn’t even transfer your chats when setting up a new phone , let alone access your WhatsApp account on other devices like a laptop or tablet . Another persistent stumbling block: the inability to use your WhatsApp account on more than one smartphone. Luckily, that’s old news now too .

WhatsApp announced the change on Tuesday on the app’s official blog , touting it as a highly requested feature by users. (Exactly.) This step means you can now sign in to WhatsApp on smartphones other than your main device, be it iPhone or Android, along with the existing ability to access your account from tablets, computers, or browsers. (You have a limit of four devices, so choose carefully.)

How to set up WhatsApp on a second smartphone

Setting up WhatsApp on another phone is as easy as ever . Grab your new phone, install whatsapp and start setting up. However, you don’t want to choose the normal option to enter a phone number. Rather, you’ll want to select the new “link to existing account” option that appears. This button will present a QR code, which, you guessed it, you scan on another smartphone.

Launch WhatsApp on your main phone, then go to “Settings” and select “Link device”. Then scan the QR code on another phone to establish a connection.

How to choose a new “primary” device

Another thing to keep in mind is which phone WhatsApp considers to be your primary device. WhatsApp treats the original smartphone you’re signed in on as “primary”, which doesn’t matter in most use cases. However, if you don’t use WhatsApp on your primary device for 14 days, the app will disconnect you on all connected devices. If you want to replace your main device, download the latest version of WhatsApp on your new phone and then sign in with your phone number instead of the tethering setup described below. WhatsApp will automatically accept the new phone as the primary phone.
